Testing strength of pipes.-Relates to machines for hydraulically testing pipes wherein the pipe is placed between headstocks and the points made by screwing up a follower prior to the test, and consists in the provision of auxiliary screwoperated followers, carried by auxiliary headstocks, pivotally mounted in slidable blocks adapted to be traversed in stationary longitudinal guide frames to render the machine capable of testing branched pipes, tees and bends. In Fig. 1 the machine is applied to testing a straight pipe with oppositely situated branches set angularly thereto. The headstocks 1, 2 carry the usual receiving ram 3 and main screw-operated follower 4. The headstocks are provided with side frames constituting guides 5, in each of which is mounted a slidable block 6 traversed by screw and nut mechanism 7. Pivoted in each block 6 is an auxiliary headstock 8 carrying a screw-operated follower 9. The ends of the main pipe are first sealed by the ram 3 and the follower 4 after which the blocks 6 are moved and their headstocks 8 swivelled so as to bring the followers 9 into alignment with the branch pipes, whereupon they are sealed by screwing them up against the pipes. The filling water is supplied and the proof pressure applied by way of a passage 13 in the head of the ram 3. In testing a tee-piece, a suitably shaped packing .is placed between one of the auxiliary followers and the main pipe, while in testing a bend a suitably-shaped packing is placed between the pipe and the main and one of the auxiliary followers.
