Description

Domestic Cooking Appliances This invention relates to domestic cooking appliances, and particularly to such appliances which incorporate an oven. The invention is especially applicable to domestic gas cooking appliances although it is also applicable to electric cooking appliances.
There is a trend at the present time towards the so-called "clean" kitchen which involves the removal from the kitchen of cooking fumes, odours, etc. At the present time this is partially achieved using cooker hoods or fanned air extractors, but these have not proved to be totally adequate.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of domestic cooking appliance for use in a so-called "clean" kitchen.
According to the present invention there is provided a domestic cooking appliance which includes at least one cooking oven, and venting means for externally venting said oven.
By externally venting is meant providing a vent outlet which is external to the kitchen, and preferably to the house, in which the cooking appliance is located.
In carrying out the invention it may be arranged that the venting means includes a fan.
In a preferred arrangement said cooking oven may incorporate an internal fan, in which case fan driving means may be provided for driving said internal fan and said venting means fan.
Advantageously, it may be arranged that said oven includes a grill arrangement.
In addition, it may be arranged that said appliance includes a further cooking oven which is connected to said venting means; a kitchen air extractor arrangement which is connected to said venting means, said air extractor arrangement conveniently being disposed adjacent a hob unit which forms part of said appliance; an eye-level grill which is connected to said venting means; and a hot water heater which is connected to said venting means, said hot water heater conveniently being disposed underneath said oven; or any combination thereof.
It may also be arranged that the venting means takes the form of a balanced flue, having a vent outlet and an air inlet.
Some exemplary embodiments of the invention will now be described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Figs. 1 to 4 of which are depicted various forms of domestic cooking appliance each in accordance with the present invention.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is depicted, somewhat diagrammatically, a rear, cut-away view of a domestic cooking appliance 1. The appliance 1 comprises a main oven chamber 2 and above it a secondary oven/grill chamber 3. The oven chambers 2 and 3 are connected by means of a vent pipe 4, which is itself connected to a rearwardly extending vent pipe 5 which extends through a cavity wall 6 and which terminates in a grille outlet 7. The vent pipe 5 and grille outlet 7 may take the form of a simple vent outlet, or more advantageously may take the form of a balanced flue which comprises a vent outlet and also an air inlet.
By providing the oven chambers 2 and 3 with such an external vent, any cooking fumes, odours, etc. are vented directly to the outside and are not admitted to the kitchen as is the usual practice. It will be appreciated that an external vent as described is particularly advantageous when used as part of a domestic gas cooking appliance, since it is then necessary to dispose of the usual products of combustion as well as cooking odours.
Although the cooking appliance 1 of Fig. 1 is depicted as including two oven chambers 2 and 3, it will be appreciated that only one oven chamber may be included.
The cooking appliance 1 of Fig. 1 also includes a hob unit 8 which is inset in a worktop 9 of a kitchen unit 10 which houses the cooking appliance 1. It will be appreciated that the hob unit 8 and the oven chambers 2 and 3 may be separate units as depicted in Fig. 1 or they may form part of a single, floorstanding or built-in appliance.
In order to increase the efficiency of the oven venting system depicted in Fig. 1, it is envisaged that a fan arrangement be incorporated therein whereby vent gases are forcibly extracted from the oven chambers 2 and 3. Such a fan arrangement may be incorporated in the vent pipe 5, or, in the case where the main oven chamber 2 is of the forced convection type and includes its own internal fan, the forced draught for the venting system may be derived from the oven fan thereby obviating the need to provide a separate fan.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, there is depicted a variation of the cooking appliance 1 of Fig. 1, which is basically the same but with the addition of an air extractor arrangement 11 whereby the oven venting system is also used to extract air in the vicinity of the hob unit 8. The air extractor arrangement comprises a grille 12 which is inset-in the worktop 9 at the rear of the hob unit 8, the grille 12 being coupled to an extension 13 of the vent pipe 4. The grille 12 may be fixed in the worktop 9 or it may be of pop-up form as described in co-pending patent application No. 8727170.
By providing the air extractor arrangement 11, cooking fumes and odours in the kitchen generally, but especially in the vicinity of the hob unit 8, are vented to the outside.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, there is depicted a further variation of the cooking appliance 1 of Fig. 1, which is basically the same but with the addition of a hot water heater 14 which is located beneath the main oven chamber 2, and preferably in the bottom of the kitchen unit 10 in the area normally associated with the plinth of the kitchen unit 10. The water heater 14 is coupled to a downwards extension 15 of the vent pipe 4 so that flue gases from the water heater 14 are vented to the outside via the vent pipes 4 and 5 and the grille outlet 7.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, there is depicted a cooking appliance 16 which is similar to the cooking appliance 1 of Fig. 1 but which includes only a single oven chamber 17 disposed below a hob unit 18 but which also includes a hot water heater 19, similar to the hot water heater 14 of Fig. 3, and also an eye-level. grill 20. The eye-level grill 20 is supported above the hob unit 18 by means of a splash-back 21. The oven chamber 17, the hot water heater 19 and the eye-level grill 20 are all interconnected by a vertically disposed vent pipe 22, which is connected to a rearwardly extending vent pipe 23 which extends through the cavity wall 6 and which terminates in a grille outlet 24.
As in the cooking appliance of Fig. 1, the vent pipe 23 and grille outlet may take the form of a simple vent outlet, or more advantageously may take the form of a balanced flue, and it may be fanned or not as required.
The grill 20 may also be provided with an air extractor arrangement to remove general kitchen fumes and odours.
