Fabrics having knitted and crocheted threads combined with a groundwork of woven threads; openwork fabrics. - A non-laddering fabric is formed from warp and weft threads d, e and knitting threads b, the threads d, e being interlaced by combined weaving and knitting devices. The threads b are traversed by guides c and operated on by sliding needles n to make a warp knitted fabric. The threads d pass through eyes in curved arms l mounted on bars k about a centre x to make a shed through which a shuttle f passes the thread e. To interlace the knitted and woven products, arched grippers q are mounted on elongated bosses g on a shaft and are rocked through 180‹. Each gripper is channelled and has a forked offset end h which passes under and grips a knitting thread b. The bosses g are grooved at i to accommodate the parts of the threads extending to the guides c. The shuttle passes through the arched parts of the grippers and through slots in their supports. The weft is beaten up by an horizontally moving reed s formed of I-shaped plates. If the arms l are brought over to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, a double fabric, interlaced with knitting, is produced. Pile and patterned fabrics and knitted fabric only partially interlaced with woven threads can be made.
