Abstract

Yarns and fabrics composed of vegetable fibres, especially cotton and linen, are scoured and bleached, while conserving the weight of the goods, by first removing the whole of the oil, fat and wax by means of hot or boiling organic solvents as described, for example, in Specification 170,534, then subjecting the goods to a partial purification by scouring with lime or caustic alkalies in the cold or at temperatures lower than boiling temperature, and finally bleaching by any of the known methods except such as involve boiling with solutions of lime or caustic alkalies. The scoured and bleached goods may be subjected to mercerizing or other suitable finishing treatment. Specifications 19428/96, 137,968, and 165,198 also are referred to.
