Abstract

Lecithin is used in dyeing cotton, wool, artificial silk, silk or other textile fibres and fabrics in order to improve the penetration, brilliance and resistance to rubbing of the dyes, and to render the fibres soft and glossy. The lecithin may be obtained for example from soya beans, lupins, peas, cereal germs and yeast, but residues obtained in the purification of nutrient phosphatides may be employed. Two extraction processes are described (1) husked soyabeans, after being rolled are extracted with a mixture of benzene and alcohol and the solvent then removed by evaporation. The bulk of the oil, which is simultaneously extracted, is separated by passing in steam and centrifuging; (2) a benzene extract of soyabeans is freed from solvent and treated with steam, whereby the lecithin and impurities separate as a lower layer. This is dissolved in trichlorethylene, filtered and evaporated. The quantity of oil impurity may be further reduced by treating with acetone or acetic ester. In examples of dyeing processes, materials are dyed in baths containing Chlorantine fast green BL and Indanthrene blue GCD to which lecithin has been added. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the addition of lecithin to any bath for the treatment of fibres and fabrics. The boiling and bucking of raw cotton with alkaline liquids under pressure, and the cleaning and brightening of fibres are referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
