Abstract

221,261. Woosnam, A., (Hulse Manufacturing Co.). June 1, 1923. Embossing; holders for loose types. -An embossing-press, adapted more particularly for forming advertising cards by punching characters from paper and forcing them into a cardboard backing of contrasting colour, is provided with relatively narrow pressheads so that the press can be handoperated, and has means on the lower press-head for supporting a long typeforme and a long sheet or a number of short sheets of the material to be embossed in sections by manually advancing the forme and material step-by-step between the press-heads and actuating the press after each step. The upper fixed head 21 is supported by posts 22 above a box-like base 20 in which slides the movable head 25. Mounted in the base 20, its ends being free to slide in vertical slots 29, is a cam 26 for operating the head 25, the cam being spaced from the bottom wall of the base and from the head 25 by thrust plates 31, 32 and antifriction rollers 36. A rigid bar 38 is sunk into the surface of the head 25 so as to be flush therewith, and extends beyond the sides of the bed considerably more in one direction than in the other. To this bar is attached a plate 40 having upstanding side flanges 42 and serving to support the type-forme and material as they are moved between the press-heads. The types are slid into channelled members 58, Fig. 9. having serrated tongues 59 at their ends adapted to engage with serrations in side grooves 51, 52 in a rectangular frame 43 - - 47 so as to be held rigidly in the frame. A hinged top 44<a> is provided to the bar 44 so that the groove 52 can be uncovered and the members 58 inserted in the frame. The type frame is hinged by the member 47 to another frame 49, 50 adapted to slide on the plate 40 and arranged so that the types are face downward, vertical movement between the two frames being allowed by vertical slots in the bars 49 engaged by the member 47. The members 49 may be connected by a base plate 64, Fig. 14. In operation, the sliding frame is drawn out from between the press-heads and the type frame hinged up to rest against the upper press-head. The cardboard and paper are now placed in position on the plate 40, Fig. 6, or on the plate 64, Fig. 14, and the type frame lowered, when the types and material can be slid between the pressure members for the embossing operation.
