Abstract

220,840. Schmidt, F. Oct. 10, 1923. Transformers. - The primary and secondary coils of a transformer supplying current to arc welding apparatus are mounted on the same limb of the core, and are adapted to be moved positively towards or away from one another for the purpose of varying the strength of the current supplied to the electrode. In the single-phase core type transformer shown in Fig. 1, the primary coil 2 is fixed, while the secondary coil 3 is adjustably mounted on a screw-threaded spindle 7 provided with a hand-wheel 8. Both limbs of the core may carry windings, and the secondary windings may be separately adjustable for supplying two separate welding places with currents of different strength. In applying the invention to three-phase transformers, the secondary windings 19 - - 21 may be simultaneously adjustable and connected to electrodes 27 - - 29 mounted in a common handle 30, as shown in Fig. 5, or the secondary windings may be connected to independent electrodes and adjusted separately. The transformer may be mounted in a sheet-metal casing 43, Fig. 7, provided with ventilating slots, the casing being supported on wheels 36.
