Abstract
A collapsible container (10) for dispensing sealants and other fluid materials comprises a nozzle (15) having a frusto- conical stepped configuration (19) which provides a plurality of stepped annular sealing surfaces along the length of the nozzle which engage correspondingly stepped annular sealing surfaces in a stepped frusto-conical bore (25) in the screw threaded cap (22). A plurality of annular seals are thus provided inside the cap to prevent leakage around the cap after the seal at the end of the nozzle has been pierced, and the cap replaced. The configuration also permits the nozzle to be severed at several different locations along its length, and still to provide at least one sealing surface inside the cap. <IMAGE>
Description
COLLAPSIBLE DISPENSING CONT I\IERS This invention relates to a collapsible dispensing container for use in dispensing both low and high viscosity substances, such as anaerobic sealing material.
In the past such collapsible dispensing containers have been formed by a collapsible plastics tube heat sealed at least at one end. When such containers are used in an applicator gun the sealed seam or seams tend to burst when the container is subjected to a pressure in the region of 201bs per square inch b\, a piston in the applicator gun. Also the nozzles used on such known containers are susceptible to leakage. When placing the nozzle on the filled container the container is gripped at its lower end and the torque required to screw the nozzle onto the other end of the container to provide a good seal can not be achieved due to the tendency of the container to twist and this causes the product to spill from the container.
According to the present invention there is provided a collapsible dispensing container comprising a blow-moulded seamless collapsible container member provided at one end with an externally screw-threaded neck extending from a gripping block portion provided on said one end of the container, a dispensing nozzle having an internally scres-ttireaded portion which engages the externally screw-threaded neck and which is provided with an externally tapered annular portion which enters and seals against the neck of the container, and a sealing member provided between the end of the neck and the nozzle.
With such a collapsible container there are no sealed seams which can burst, the nozzle is sealed to the neck at two regions and due to the provision of the gripping block the torque required to screw the nozzle onto the container to provide a good seal can be achieved as such torque does not cause the container to twist as the reaction force is taken by the gripping block and it is not transniitted through the body of the container. Thus the body of the container can be thin walled allowing it to be collapsed to approximately one fifth of its original length.
Preferably the nozzle has a stepped frusto-conical portion which is sealed at its outer end and is provided with a cap having a frusro-conical stepped bore and which has an internal screw-threaded portion engageable with an externally screw-threaded portion of the nozzle. Such an arrangement ensures that wherever the stepped frusto-conical portion of the nozzle is severed to allow the contents of the container to be dispensed the cap will seal against the frusto-conical portion at least at one location.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the container member,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the neck end of the container member,
Figure 3 is a side elevation of one form of nozzle which can be connected to the container,
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the nozzle of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section through a cap which can be placed on the nozzle, and
Figure 6 is a longitudinal section through an alternative form of nozzle.
The collapsible dispensing container comprises a seamless collapsible container body 10 which is blow-rnoulded and preferably formed of a low density polythene. 3ne end of the body 10 is provided with a thickened gripping block portion 11 having flat sides 12. Extending from the gripping block 11 is a neck 13 having an external screw-thread 14.
Engageable with the neck 13 is a dispensing nozzle 15 as shown in figures 3 and 4 or a dispensing nozzle 16 shown in Figure 6. The dispensing nozzle 15 has an internally screw-threaded portion 17 provided on its outer side with longitudinally extending ribs 18. The portion 17 is connected to a stepped frusto-conical portion 19 which is extended in the direction of the portion 17 by an annular externally tapered portion 20. Received between the portion 17 and the portion 20 is an annular sealing ring 21. When the nozzle 15 is screwed onto the neck 13 the portion 20 enters the neck 13 and is in sealing sealing contact therewith and the sealing ring 21 seals between the axial end of the neck 13 and the portion 17.Engageable with the stepped portion 19 is a sealing cap 22 which has an internal screw-thread 23 engageable with an external screw thread 24 provided at the base of the portion 19. The cap 22 has an internal stepped frusto-conical bore 25, the steps of which contact the steps on the portion 19. The portion 19 has a conical bore 26. The portion 19 can be severed at any desired point along its length in order to provide an outlet of a diameter to suit the viscosity of the product to be dispensed but wherever it is severed the cap 22 will have at least one of its steps engaged with a step on the portion 20 thus providing a seal against leakage.
Instead of using a dispensing nozzle 15 the nozzle 16 can be used.
The nozzle 16 is similar to nozzle 15 except that the portion 26 is frusto-conical and not stepped and its discharge end is closed by a diaphragm 27 which can be pierced or ruptured.
In a filling machine, the gripping block 11 is gripped and when the container has been charged with the product a capping chuck which grips the ribs 18 of a nozzle 15 or 16 is rotated and lowered to engage the screw-threaded portion 17 with the screw-thread 24 and a predetermined torque is applied to the nozzle 15 or 16. As this torque is resisted by the block portion 11 it is not transmitted through the body 10 and thus the container body 10 will not twist. Thus the container body 10 can be thin walled and in use is able to be collapsed to approximately one fifth of its original length. Because the container has no seams it has less tendency to burst when subjected to pressure in an applicator gun and the double seal between the nozzle and the neck ensures that there is no leakage between the nozzle and container.
