Abstract

220,631. Bethlehem Steel Co., (Assignees of Linderman, G. B.). Aug. 14, 1923, [Convention date]. Fluids, regulating volume of flow or pressure of; electrically-actuated valves.-In a gas-meter of the orifice type, the area of the orifice is varied in accordance with changes in the differential pressure due to varying flow, the means for varying the area of the orifice being connected to an indicating and integrating device. In order that the gas shall be measured in standard units, means are provided to compensate for changes in the specind gravity, pressure, temperature, and moisture content. The upstream section 10 of the gas main is connected by conduits 16, 17 to the interior of a receptacle 18, and the downstream section 11 by a conduit 19 with a receptacle 20 preferably arranged in the receptacle 18. The conduit 19 also preferably communicates with the receptacle 18 through a conduit 22 to assure a circulation of gas through the receptacle 18. The receptacle 18, 20 are separated by a seal consisting of liquid in a cup 25 and the receptacle 20, and the level in the cup 25 therefore depends on the differential pressure. A float 27 in the cup 25 is suspended from a lever 28 carrying contacts 29 adapted to co-operate with contacts 30, so that when the differential pressure changes, an electric motor 14 is driven in one direction or the other to operate means for varying the area of the orifice, which is preferably constituted of an iris diaphragm, until the differential pressure returns to its predetermined value, a recording and integrating device being simultaneously operated. In order to neutralize the effect of a change in specific gravity of the gas, a float 76 depending from the lever 28 floats in a cup 75 connected to a cup 73, in which is a float or plunger 72 suspended from a floating diaphragm 67, the under surface of the diaphragm 67 being acted on by gas in the conduit 17, and the upper surface by air in a liquid-sealed tube 61. The effects of changes in pressure, temperature, and moisture content are neutralized by a float depending from the lever 28 into liquid contained in a cup 81 connected to a receptacle 78, this receptacle containing water and a unit of gas and being in good heat conductive relation with respect to the gas main. Specification 232,606 is referred to.
