Abstract
Towable turf dressing apparatus (10) comprising a trough (16) having at its base an auger (20) to direct dressing material to a rotatable disc for spreading the dressing material. A curtain (40) surrounds the disc-end of the apparatus to restrict spread of the dressing material. <IMAGE>
Description
Title: Turf Dressing Apparatus
DESCRIPTION
This invention concerns turf dressing apparatus.
Turf can be dressed with a variety of dressing materials including sand, soil, peat and mixtures of any of these. Typical turf dressing apparatus currently in use comprises a conveyor feeding dressing material to a rotating brush type spreader. Problems associated with such dressing apparatus include spillage during loading from a front end loader and lack of control over spread of the dressing material.
The object of this invention is therefore to provide alternative turf dressing apparatus.
According to the invention there is provided towable turf dressing apparatus comprising a trough-like container for the dressing material containing auger means for feeding the dressing material to spreading means.
The spreading means is preferably a rotatable disc with one or more upstands to direct dressing material from the disc radially outwards.
The trough is preferably of such a length that side loading from a front end loader is possible in order to avoid spillage of dressing material.
The trough preferably also contains means for disturbing the dressing material in order to prevent bridging thereof over the auger means. Such means for disturbing may comprise a rotatable shaft bearing flails.
The apparatus of the invention preferably also has means for restricting spread of the dressing material to a desired area. Said restricting means may be a curtain supported around the end of the apparatus.
The desired area is preferably slightly larger than the wheel span of the apparatus so that it is not necessary to tow the apparatus across areas previously dressed to achieve total coverage of an area of turf.
Restricting the area of spread of dressing material can also have the advantage of providing a substantially uniform spread of dressing material over a large area.
Conveniently power for the turf dressing apparatus of the invention may be provided by the towing vehicle via a power take off and suitable coupling to the various rotatable shafts. Typically the auger will be connected more or less directly to the power take off but other shafts will be rotated via chain or belt drive connections and gears as convenient.
This invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from the rear and side of turf dressing apparatus; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view from the front and above of turf dressing apparatus.
Referring to the drawings, turf dressing apparatus 10, comprises a generally rectangular frame 12 supported by wheels 8 on axle 9, the frame having arms 14 rising therefrom to support a trough shaped container 16.
The container 16 has at its base an auger 20 connectable at one end via a linkage 22 to a power take off of a towing vehicle, such as a tractor. At its other end, the auger 20 leads to a hole 24 at the rear of the trough 16.
At the rear of the container 16 is a horizontally mounted rotatable disc 28 that has four radial upstands 30. The disc 28 is mounted on the end of a vertical shaft 32 connected via a bevel gear arrangement to a shaft 34 through the trough to a housing 36 containing a chain drive linkage to the power take off of the towing vehicle.
In use the trough container 16 will be covered by a mesh grill 38 as shown in Figure 1. Also as shown in
Figure 2, the rear of the dressing apparatus is surrounded by a curtain 40 supported by a generally rectangular tubular framework 42 mounted on the sides of the container 16 by means of two tubular members 44 and 45 of the framework 42 attached to brackets 46 on the sides of the container 16.
One feature of the dressing apparatus not shown is the provision of a second shaft in the lower part of the trough fitted with flails, the shaft being rotatable via a suitable coupling again to power take off of the towing vehicle. The flail is to disturb the dressing material to prevent bridging thereof over the auger.
In use the trough container 16 of the dressing apparatus 10 is filled with dressing material and then lowered over the area to be dressed. As the apparatus is towed, the auger moves the dressing material through the hole 24 and onto the rotating disc 28 which spreads the material radially onto the ground. The curtain 40 restricts the area of ground dressed to just beyond the wheels so that the dresser does not have to be towed over ground already dressed.
Claims (8)
