Abstract

220,573. Schmidt, A. Feb. 27, 1924. Butt joints.-In a butt joint for pipes, of the type wherein one flange 1 is formed with an annular bifurcated tongue 2 pressed into an annular groove 7 in the other flange, the edges 5 of the bifurcation of the tongue are made sharp and resilient, so that when the flanges are pressed together the said edges 5 are bent over tightly against the bottom of the groove 7 to form a fluidtight joint. The groove 7 is slightly wider at its outer end than the tongue 2, and at its bottom it is narrower by about the same amount; further, the depth of the groove is slightly less than the projecting length of the tongue.
