Abstract
Footwear, or a part thereof such as the upper or sole, is provided with an artificial scent incorporated in the fabric. Also, a method of producing odorized leather comprises adding artificial odours during the processing. Where the odour is incorporated in a shoe sole, the latter may be formed from an odour-containing vulcanisable rubber or plasticized PVC composition.
Description
ODORIZED FOOTWEAR
Background of the Invention The invention herein considered deals with footwear which has had an artificial scent or fragrance added to the whole, parts or only one part of the footwear durin its production.
The footwear that covers and adorns the foot is made up of two basic elements or parts, (1) the sole, and (2) the upper and/or vamp.
The sole is the bottom part of the footwear that comes into contact with the ground or floor. It is the part o the footwear on which one stands, walks or runs.
The upper and/or vamp is the upper part of the footwear that covers or envelops the upper part of the foot (toes, instep, ankle) completely or partially.
The sole as part of the footwear may consist of one pie ce or several pieces placed vertically, diagonally or horizontally; it may or may not have a tread design, mold marking, pat tern, print or engraving; it may or may not have ornaments, decorations or embellishments; it may consist of one or more mate rials; it may have any of various geometric shapes; it may have one or several colors; it may or may not have an insole.
The upper that forms part of the footwear may consist of one or several pieces that may be joined by one or various means: it may or may not have reinforcements or stays to protect a part or parts of the feet; it may or may not have ornaments, de corations or embellishments; it may consist of one or more materials; it may have any of various geometric shapes; it may ha ve one or several colors; it may vary in height; it may have se veral forms of being tied or fastened to the foot, either alone or through other means.
In the manufacturing of the footwear, the sole and the upper may be joined by any of the known means, such as injection, adhesion, sewing, etc.
Sight and touch are the only human senses with which the footwear industry has tried to identify its respective products; sight as a physical sense that perceives the appearance, shape and color of the basic elements of footwear; touch as physical sense that perceives heat, cold, pressure or traction exerted on the skin in relation to the basic elements of the footwear.
However, the footwear industry has not exploited the com mercial incidence that footwear may have on the remaining senses of hearing and taste.
To this date, the state of the art has implied keeping the natural odor, smell or scent of each of the component materials that make up the footwear, without emphasizing the odors characteristics of or peculiar to the materials.
The present invention relates to footwear whose principal characteristic is directed towards consciously stimulating the sense of smell and directed towards the consumer irrespective of the senses of sight, touch, hearing and taste.
This purpose or objective will be reached by artificial ly odorizing one or several or all of the component materials that make up each of the basic elements of the parts that form the footwear.
This process of artificial odorization of scenting may be done in the process of extracting or obtaining raw materials and/or manufacturing process of the footwear and/or the process of finishing the footwear and this applies to each of the basic elements that are part of the footwear.
Description of Some Embodiment Samtles In the processing and manufacture of shoes, the fragrances which will provide the artificial odorization of the shoes may be added in different manners depending on the material to be provided with the fragrance.
First, if leather is to be provided with the fragrance, then the fragrance is introduced during preparation of the leather. In preparation of leather, the normal tanning process falls in the following sequence:
1) tue leather is in the orm ol a hide, and is soaked, flushed, limed. and urbaired:: 2) at the tanning stage the hide is then bated, pickled,
tanned and mulled;
3) the hide then goes through blue sort where it is
wrung and sorted;
4) the leather or hide is then split to proper weight,
that is thickness, and shaved to even thickness;
5) in a post-tanning process, the leather is retanned, colored, filled, fat liquored, wrung and set;
6) the hide is then put through a drying stage where
it is pasted on plates, dried by air and heat in a tun
nel;
7) in the conditioning stage, the hide is then washed,
wet-backed, mulled, staked and dried, crust sorted and
trimmed;
8) in the finishing stage the leather is buffed, brush
ed, stained, brush coated, plated, top coated;
9) the leather is then used for further processing,
such as being cut into form and made into shoes.
In the preparation of leathers, the artificial odors or scents are added to the leather only during the processes of stages 2 (tanning), 5 (post-tanning), 8 (finishing).
When the fragrance is to be added at the tanning stage, the following formula is used:
Tanned leather 100 parts
Chrome Tanned Liquor 40.0 to 60.0 parts
Buffer Salt 0.2 to 0.5 parts
Sodium Bicarbonate 0.2 to 1.0 parts
Artificial Odors 1.0 to 3.0 parts iEnen the fragrance is added at the post-tanning stage, the f^" o -ng formula Is used:
Retanned Leather 100 parts
Retanned Agent 30.0 to 50.0 parts
Sytans Agents 2.0 to 5.0 parts
Artificial Odors 1.0 to 3.0 parts
Water 40.0 to 60.0 parts.
When the fragrance is added at the fat liquoring stage, the following formula is used:
Leather 100 parts Fat-Liquoring Agent 4.0 to 8.0 parts
Water 30.0 to 50.0 parts
Artificial Odors 1.0 to 3.0 parts
When the fragrance is added at the finishing stage, the following formula is used:
Stained Leather 100 parts
Pigments 10.0 to 15.0 parts
Solvents 70.0 to 80.0 parts
Binders 3.0 to 6.0 parts
Artificial Odors 1.0 to 3.0 parts
Otherwise, the complete process is similar to that of the state of the art. However, the above-described formulas are used during the processing of the leather.
For the production of shoes with rubber soles and artificial odorization, the following formula is used:
The rubber compounds are mixed in a Banbury or mill mix
er, and the following formula is used:
Rubber 100.0 parts
Process Aids 2.0 to 10.0 parts
Activators 3.0 to 4.0 parts
Accelerators 2.0 to 4.0 parts
Fillers 20.0 to 70.0 parts Pigments .5 to 3.5 parts
Sulphur 1.5 to 3.0 parts
Artificial Odors 1.0 to 4.5 parts.
Using the above formula, the rubber is processed using the state of the art processing for rubber soles in the footwear as is known by those skilled in the art.
For a thermoplastic shoe sole, which are used in an injection molding process, the sole is odorized as follows:
The mixing compounds are made in a Henschel, Papermeier,
ribbon or Banbury mixer. The proportions of the compound
are as follows:
PVC resin 100.0 parts
Plasticizers 60.0 to 100.0 parts
Stabilizers 3.0 to 10.0 parts Process Aids L O to 3.0 parts Pigments .5 to 2.5 parts Artificial Odors .5 to 3.5 parts.
It is easily seen that the proportions of artificial odors will depend on the concentration of the scent or odor used, the condition of the process and the intensity of the odor or perfume required. The odors may be chosen from fragrances, odors or perfumes or flowers, for example, roses, fruits, for example, strawberries, and/or artificial odors or perfumes manufactured by man. Artificial odors, scents, fragrances or perfumes can be applied to textile threads, insole material, lining laces, adhesives, ornaments and many other parts that form the footwear.
