Abstract

An attachment means comprises a body portion (2) formed with a neck portion (4) by means of which a visually recognisable insignia, decoration, data-bearing badge or the like can be applied to a substrate such as a fabric substrate which has a seam or slot therein. Examples of such substrates are slippers, bags, muffs, jackets, trousers, skirts, stockings or the like. The body portion (2) has on at least one side the insignia etc. The neck portion (4) extends from the body portion and is intended to receive a row of stitches (S). In use, the neck portion is inserted into a seam or slot formed by two layers of the substrate or by folding over an edge of the substrate and the substrate and the body portion are stitched together. <IMAGE>

Description

Title Attachment means The invention relates to attachment means for use in the application of visually recognisable insignia, decoration, data-bearing badges and the like to a substrate, In particular a substrate including a slot or closable seam.
It is well known to secure badges and the like to a substrate by means of adhesive or a peripheral row or rows of stitching. However, such methods of attachment may prove less than permanent after some time in use.
The invention therefore provides an attachment means comprising a base portion adapted to support on at least one outwardly visible surface thereof a desired decoration or data-bearing motif, said base portion being provided with an integrally formed neck portion extending therefrom and adapted to be incorporated into a closable seam or slot in a substrate.
Preferably the neck portion is appreciably narrower than the base portion, which may be substantially planar. Examples of attachment means to be described below includea plurality of layers comprising the base portion, said layers being bound or otherwise sealed at peripheral edges. The outer layer may be provided with a raised pattern formed from a plurality of material or fabric portions in a stitched assembly.
The substrate may be any desired fabric article such as, for example, slippers, bags, muffs, jackets, trousers, skirts, socks, stockings or the like. While stitches may be used to secure the neck portions, where the substrate is of plastics material the securing seam may be formed by heat-welding.
If convenient, a fastening means such as a loop and button or toggle may be provided at a location diametrically spaced from the neck portion. Conveniently then the attachment means may be used as a closure flap for a pouch formed in the substrate.
There will now be described with reference to the drawings an attachment means according to the invention. It will be understood that the description is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation.
In the drawings: Figures 1 and 2 are side and rear views of an attachment means; and Figures 3 and 4 are fragmentary views illustrating alternative ways of securing said means to a seamed substrate.
The attachment means comprises a main body portion 2 in the form of a disc. The body portion is provided wtih an integrally formed neck portion 4 and is composed of two layers of fabric 6, 8 and an intermediate padding layer (not shown). The layers are bound together at their peripheries by corded tape 10. A multi-layer motif 12 is secured to the fabric layer 6. The neck portion 4 is intended to receive a row of stitches along the chain dotted line 5.
Figure 5 shows the neck portion 4 sewn into an in-turned seam between two portions of fabric substrate 14, and Figure 4 shows a neck portion as received in an over-turned or fell seam or in a collar seam. Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
