Description

C.7 Container For Filling French Breed This invention relates to a
cartridge or container for the preparation of filled French bread, bread rolls or the like (also referred to hereinafter as sandwiches).
So-called "fast food" products of th"e hotdog or sandwich type include a product which consists of a bread roll holed and packed with a food filling in the form of a proper cooked dish. This product was designed to be prepared from sticks of frozen food filling. The stick is introduced into the bread roll holed beforehand, after which the filled roll is placed in a microwave oven in which the filling is reheated.
Now, although microwave reheating.may be convenient for the filling, the same does not necessarily apply to the bread roll. Accordingly, to be able to make a sandwich of the type in question from a hot filling and a fresh bread roll, it has been proposed to supply the filling in a tube closed on the one hand at its front end by a removable stopper and, on the other hand, near its rear end by a piston-like ele ment. Before the sandwich is prepared, the tube and its contents are reheated and the tube open at its front end is inserted with its contents into th e bread roll, after which the tube is withdrawn, the p-iston being immobilized to hold, the hot filling in the fresh bread roll. This-system is ingen ious but relatively complicated.
The object of the present invention is to provide a cartridge for the preparation of sandwiches of the type in question which also enables a hot food filling to be intro duced into a fresh bread roll, but which is considerably more simple than the known piston tube.
To this end, the cartridge according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a cylindrical tube of semi-rigid material containing a food filling, its two ends have been sealed by pinching of the tube and at least one end comprises gripping means.
2 I It has been found that, with a cartridge thus charac- terized, of which the design and hence the production is simpler than that of the known piston tube, it is possible to prepare sandwiches of the same type with comparable ease.
in particular, it has been found that it is possible to de sign a cylindrical tube of semi-rigid material which shows, on the one hand, the rigidity required for introduction into a pre-holed fresh bread roll although it contains a hot filling and, on the other hand, the flexibility)required for its withdrawal from the roll while, at the same time, it is pinched so that the filling stays inside the bread roll.
The semi-rigid material of which the cartridge accord- ing to the invention is made may preferably be selected from plastics or even metals capable of exhibiting the various properties required for the cartridge to lend itself to its intended use.
These various properties include, in-particular, (i) sufficient rigidity at a temperature of from about to 1000C (ii) adequate mechanical strength and imperviousness at a temperature of from about -400C (freezing) to about +1300C (cooking), (iii) sufficient flexibility at a temperature of from about to 1000C and (iv) ready acceptability in regard to contact with the filling.
Materials capable of satisfying these various require- ments are, for example, plastics, such as a polypropylene or a mixture of polypropylene and a polyester, metals, such as aluminium or any of its alloys or composite materials, such as a plastics/aluminium laminate.
The cartridge according to the invention is preferably in the form of a tube 14 to 40 mm in diameter. This tube has the desired rigidity and flexibility if it is made of polypropylene or of a mixture of polypropylene and polyester 1 for example and has a wall thickness of 200 to 300 pm. A tube such as this may have been formed either by extrusion or by rolling, cutting and welding for example.
The food filling will preferably have been introduced into the cartridge after formation of the tube and sealing thereof at one end.
If the tube is made of a plastics material for example, the two ends of the cartridge will have been sealed, prefer ably by hot pinching of the tube, i.e. by heat-sealing be tween the heated jaws of a flat clamp. The two ends of the cartridge may also be sealed by clipping of the tube, i.e.
each end of t he cartridge may be pinched by a fixed metal clip.
Accordingly, at least one end of the cartridge according to the invention comprises gripping means. These gripping means may consist of one of said clips of the last embodiment described above.
For the embodiment of the cartridge in the form of a tube sealed at its ends by heat-sealing, the tube may extend beyond one of the heat-seals of the tube in the form of a doub 1 e planar wa 11. The gripping means may thus be provided in this double plane extension, for example in the form of a 20 to 30 mm diameter hole which is large enough for a finger to pass through.
The cartridge according to the invention is thus inten- ded to contain a food filling preservable by freezing and edible after defrosting and heating after having been intro duced into a fresh bread roll.
A cartridge containing a frozen filling may be re- -heated by immersion in a water bath for example, the cart- ridge being able to be introduced vertically into the bath and held in that position with the aid of the gripping means.
Reheating may also be carried out in a microwave oven or in a so-called 11circotherm11 oven for example.
To introduce the hot filling into a bread roll, the 4 bread roll may be holed, for exam-ple using a long'and pointed knife with a single blade or with a three or four point star profile. The sealed end of the cartridge opposite that com prising the gripping means may then be cut. The cut end of the cartridge may then be introduced into the pre-holed crumb and the full cartridge pushed completely into the roll. To withdraw the empty cartridge, a tractive force may be applied to the gripping means and the bread roll retained while the tube is pinched so that the filling remains inside the bread roll.
The removal of the empty cartridge from the filled bread roll may be facilitated by means of a simple device comprising, for example, a supporting surface for the bread roll and a slot a few mm wide delimited, for example, by two rods fixed vertically to the supporting surface for the the withdrawal of the cartridge.
The cartridge according to the invention is described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a first embodiment.
Figure 2 is a front view, partly. in section, of the embodiment shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sJde elev4tion'of a second embodiment.
Figu-re 4 is a front view, partly in section, of the embodiment shown in Figure 3.
In the embodiment shown in Figures I and 2, the cart- ridge according to the invention comprises a cylindrical tube I containing a filling of food. Its two ends 2, 3 have been sealed by hot pinching of the tube, i.e. by heat sealing.
One end comprises a gripping means 4 in the form of a 25 mm diameter hole provided in an extension 5 of the tube I beyond the sealing weld 2 of that end of the tube. The extension 5, which is in the form of a double planar wal 1, is itself ter- minated by an auxiliary weld 6. The tube I has been formed by rolling of a sheet of polypropylene to a thickness of I 270 pm, cutting of the sheet, folding into the form of a 23.5 mm diameter tube and longitudinal welding 7 of the folded sheet.
In the - embodiment shown in Figures I and 2, the cart- ridge according to the invention comprises a cylindrical tube 1 containing a filling of food. Its two ends have been sealed by clipping with fixed clips 2,3. One of these two clips forms the gripping means by extending considerably beyond the pinched tube on either side. The tube I has been formed by extrusion of a mixture of polypropylene and poly- ester. It.has a diameter of 23 mm and a wall thickness of 220 pm.
