Abstract
A seed drill comprises a wheeled chassis having an adjustable drill, 12, a seed dispenser 11, and a top-mounted hopper 14. The dispenser may be a spindle-mounted device which can be moved along the spindle to preset orifices of different sizes to the hopper outlet to carry seeds of different sizes. <IMAGE>
Description
SEED DRILL
This invention relates to a seed drill.
To sow seeds, the gardener first has to line out, then to make a drill. He has then to scatter the seeds along the drill, and finally to cover the said seeds, and lightly firm.
According to the present invention, there is provided a wheeled appliance comprising an adjustable drill tool mounted forward of the front axle, which is driven by one front wheel. Incorporated on the front axle is a sliding multiple seed dispenser which is fed by a top mounted seed hopper. To the rear of the front axle, mounted on the frame, are two angled filler blades. The rear wheel, on a centre line to the seed dispenser, lightly consolidates the filled soil. A reverse wheel lock is incorporated to allow the said seeds to be dispensed in the forward mode only. The side of the frame has two lugs to accommodate a handle, allowing the said appliance to be pushed from a standing position.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 shows a plan of the seed drill
Fig. 2 shows the seed dispenser
Fig. 3 illustrates the seed hopper
Fig. 4 shows the drill tool and hopper steady
Referring to the drawing Fig. 1 is a plan view of the seed drill.
It has two forward wheels 10, one of which is pinned to the axle which in turn will drive the seed dispenser 11. Mounted on the front of the frame is an adjustable drill tool 12. On the frame to the rear of the axle are two angled filler blades 13 set at ground level which refill the drill, the said drill being consolidated by the rear wheel 14. On the outer sides of the frame, midway between the front and rear wheel centres are two locating lugs is to accommodate the handle to propel the said appliance.
Fig. 2 shows the seed dispenser. It is of one piece construction turned down to two smaller diameter bosses which incorporate two holes 16 allowing it to be pinned to the axle. The centre of the seed dispenser is drilled out to be of a sliding fit to the said axle, allowing it to be pinned in any of three positions, depending on whichever seed size dispenser is required, from the smallest seed with close spacing 17 through to the largest seed at a greater spacing 18.
The seed hopper Fig. 3 has an internal taper to allow seed to flow down to the bottom discharge slot 20 which is located over any of the three seed dispensers Fig. 2. It is fixed to the appliance by a screw 19, through the slotted plate Fig. 4 24. Two tension springs are located onto the front axle.
Fig. II shows the drill tool 23 which is adjustable up and down, depending on the depth of drill required. Onto the frame 22 is bolted the hopper steady 24, which allows the hopper Fig. 3 to be lifted up, while moving along the seed dispenser, but stops any backward or forward movement.
To operate the seed drill set drill depth by adjusting drill tool 23. Remove pin from seed dispenser Fig. 2, lift up the seed hopper
Fig. 3, select the correct dispenser required for your selected seed, slide onto the axle and pin it. Drop down the seed hopper Fig. 3 over the seed dispenser Fig. 3 over the seed dispenser Fig. 2 place the seeds to be sown into the seed hopper Fig. 3, hold the handle, and walk forward at a moderate pace.
When being propelled forward, the drill tool 23 opens a drill, the seed dispenser Fig. 2 turning through the seed hopper Fig. 3 collects seed into the seed holes 17, and drops them behind the drill tool into the drill. The drill is then filled by the angled filler blades 13, and then lightly consolidated by the;real wheel lock is incorporated from the frame to the driven wheel 10 (not shown) to allow seeds to be despatched in the forward mode only.
Claims (10)
1. A seed drill comprising a wheeled chassis with a front mounted adjustable drill. The seed dispensers, driven by the front axle, are supplied by a top mounted seed hopper.
2. A seed drill as claimed in claim 1 wherein means are provided on the front centre of the chassis for the adjustment of the depth of the drill.
3. A seed drill as claimed in claim 1 wherein means are provided for the front axle to be driven by one front wheel.
4. A seed drill as claimed in claims 1-3 wherein means are provided on the front axle for the locking of the seed dispensers in any of three positions.
5. A seed drill as claimed in claim 1 wherein angled drill filler blades are mounted midway on the inner sides of the chassis.
6. A seed drill as claimed in claim 1 wherein a rear wheel, centrally mounted in the chassis, is provided to consolidate the drill.
7. A seed drill as claimed in claim 1 or claim 4 wherein circular seed dispensers affording differing size holes and spacings are driven in a forward motion by the front axle.
8. A seed drill as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a top mounted seed hopper is provided being held to the seed dispensers by springs from the front axle.
9. A seed drill as claimed in claim 8 wherein the seed hopper is located onto a slotted hopper steady to afford upward and downward movement.
