Description

D. JOHNSON July 13, 1937.
STRIPING DEVICE Filed March 8, 1955 IN VEN TOR.
ATTORNEY.
Patented July 13, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to striping devices and more particularly to a type of device that is used for marking athletic fields for games such as football, tennis, baseball and the like, or for marking 5 traffic lines on highways or roads.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for conveying the lime or other material used and dispensing it in stripe form on the ground leaving a clear, distinct mark. Provisions having been made in the construction of the device to enable it to be turned in either direction at right angle to a straight line.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means that will accomplish the above and permit controlling the amount of marking material applied by a manual adjustment made by the operator.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will, during the operation of applying the mark or stripe on the ground, keep the material used for marking agitated, thereby preventing the congealing or setting of the material, thus allowing an even mixture to be applied at all times.
The invention is fully described in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing is a part and in which the separate parts of my improvements are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the several views, and in which- Fig. 1 shows a fragmentary cross sectional side view of the entire device, and
Fig. 2 shows a fragmentary cross sectional front view of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character Ill, denotes a receptacle in which the marking material in liquid form is placed. This receptacle is provided with a cover I to keep the liquid material from splashing out of the top when the device is propelled over the ground.
The shaft I2, supports the agitator l3, consisting of a plurality of horizontally disposed arms joined at the ends by arms placed at right angle with the horizontal arms. This agitating assembly is supported by bearings 39 and 39A, respectively. The bearings 39, being equipped with a stufilng nut 40, holding a packing in place to prevent the liquid from escaping from the receptacle l0, through the hearing.
There is a driven sprocket l4, mounted on the shaft l2, and a chain l5, shown over the sprocket I4, is actuated by a drive sprocket l6, mounted on the horizontal axle shaft H, which supports the device and engages the wheels 34, at both ends. Theaxle shaft I1, is mounted in adjustable bearings I, having adjustment screws 33, to take'up the slack of the drive chain IS.
The liquid material is dispensed from the re- 5 ceptacle l0, through the valve I 9, equipped with a lever handle 20, mounted on the valve stem 2|. This valve l9, when opened allows the liquid marking material to flow into a pivotally mounted spout 22, hinged at 23, on the brackets 35, and kept in position to contact the ground at all times by the tension exerted by the resilient member 3|.
The entire unit is mounted on a frame consisting of a rearwardly disposed bracket 21, and the side supports 28 and 28A, respectively, which terminate into handles 32, at the top. There are rotatable mounted caster wheels 25, supported by yokes 24, and fastened at 26, on the frame. These casters swivel in the mounting 2B, and allow for turning the entire device at right angles while being operated on the field.
The flexible cable shown at 29, fastened at one end to a hand operated lever at 30, engaging notches or grooves 38, in one of the handles, actuate the dispensing valve |9, allowing for adjustment in the control of the flow of liquid through the valve i9, out of the receptacle Ill.
The device is further provided with an indicating medium 36, pivotally mounted at 31, providing a guide for the operator. This indicating medium I6, may be suspended on a chain or cable, not shown, when in a downward position of! the ground so as not to interfere with the operation of the unit.
In operation the liquid marking material such as lime or paint is placed into the receptacle l0, and the cover II, is closed to prevent splashing, the entire device is mounted on the wheels 34, and the casters 2!, these will permit its being propelled over the ground by the operator who 40 pushes on the handles 32. The indicating medium 38, is let down to a position an inch or two off the ground, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. As the device is propelled along the ground the pivotally mounted spout 22, has its lower edge contacting the ground and the operator opens the valve l9, by means of the lever 30, inserting this lever into one of the plurality of slots 38, provided on the handle 32. These slots will hold the lever 30, which is attached to the 50 flexible cable 29, in a fixed position and the flexible cable 29, actuating the valve lever 2|], on the valve stem 2|, opens or closes the valve Hi.
In this manner a manually governed amount of liquid marking material is dispensed through the 5 valve l9, to the spout 22, which lays it onto the ground while the device is being propelled over the surface of the field.
While the device is in motion the drive sprockets l6, revolves the agitator l3, inside of the receptacle II], by means of the drive chain l5, over the driven sprocket M, which is fastened to the shaft l2, of the agitator I3. This will keep the marking material mixed, preventing {the heavy particles from settling to the bottom of the receptacle. The indicating medium is used merely as an index to follow a line or guide on the ground for the convenience and efliciency of the operator.
The invention is susceptibleto various changes in its form and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States, is:
In a device of the character described the combination of a wheeled frame, a receptacle mounted on said frame, a shaft horizontally mounted in said receptacle, said shaft journaled in bearings mounted on the wall of said receptacle, agitating means mounted on said shaft within said receptacle in close proximity to the bottom thereof, a sprocket mounted to a depending end of said shaft, a sprocket on the axle of said wheel frame, a chain engaging the sprocket on the axle and agitating shaft rendering said agitating operations when said axle is revolving, an outlet valve on the bottom of said receptacle, a spout pivotally supported from the bottom of said receptacle and underlying said outlet valve, a resilient member for depressing the rearwardly directed discharge end of said spout toward the surface to be striped, an index control for opening said outlet valve, and a sight guide member projecting forward from said frame to guide the operation for accuracy in the operation of the device.
