Description

1 A pneumatic vane type rotary machine 2203493 This invention relates to a
pneumatic vane type rotary machine which comprises a cylinder and rotor carrying in axially extending slots a number of vanes for sealing cooperation with the cylinder.
A problem concerned with prior art machines of the above type is that a lubricant oil has to be added to the supplied motive pressure air for avoiding a high frictonal resistance between the vanes and the cylinder and, thereby, a rapid wear of the vanes. Such lubricant oil passes through the machine and is exhausted as moisture into the atmosphere, thereby causing an environmental problem, because it is hazardeous to the health breathing air containing oil droplets.
This atmosphere polluting problem concerns mainly the motor application of the above mentioned vane type rotary machine. This machine type, however, is equally applicable as a compressor for air and other gaseous fluids, and when used in the process or food industry lubricant oil is strictly prohibited.
According to the basic concept of the present invention as recited in the main claim, the above problem is solved by an improved pneumatic vane type rotary machine in which each vane consists of a selflubricating material comprising a matrix of polyamid reinforced by aramid fibres.
According to previous attempts to solve this problem carbon fibre reinforced polymers with high temperature limits have been suggested. The results have not been satisfactory. The service life of the vanes in oil free operation has been far too short.
Our choice of PolYamid as a matrix material is in itself unobvious. Due to its hygroscopic properties, which has a negative influence upon the dimension stability at various degrees of moisture absorption, as well as to its low melting temperature polyamid has been regarded as quite unsuitable for this purpose.
87706-880411 2 1 On the other hand, polyamid has very good friction properties visavi steel, and when reinforced with aramid fibres which have good friction properties too, there is obtained a vane material with selflubricating properties which is suitable primarily for smaller air motors where the strain on the vanes is not too high.
For higher performance specifications, fibres.of a high modulus of elasticity, for example fibres of glass or carbon, are added and give together with the aramid fibres a high flexural strength of the vanes.
The aramid fibres may be in a chopped form mixed into the polyamid matrix or in continuous form and arranged in layers formed for instance by weaving and hot pressing together with the polyamid matrix which melts and impregnates the fibres. When in a short chopped form, the aramid fibres are comprised in the material in a rate of 5-30 %, preferably about 15 % and when in a long chopped form the fibre rate is 10-60 %. The aramid fibres may also be contained in a continuous form and then be comprised in a rate of 30-80 %, preferably 70-80 % or in as high a rate as possible without causing weakening of the bonding between matrix and fibres.
On the enclosed drawing:
Fig 1 shows a longitudinal section through a pneumatic vane motor according to the invention.
Fig 2 shows a cross section along line II-II in Fig 1.
Fig 3 shows a cross section through a vane according to a preferred embodiment of the invention.
The vane motor shown in Figs 1 and 2 comprises a cylinder 10 and a rotor 11. In axially extending slots 12 in the rotor 11 there are supported vanes 13 for sealing cooperation with the cylinder 10. Through alternative inl,et ports 14 and 15 motive pressure air is fed 87706-880411 Q 3 into the cylinder 10, and through outlet ports 16 exhaust air is vented into the ambient atmosphere.
A motor of this type is suitable for use in pneumatic power tools, such as surface grinders, drilling machines, screw drivers and power wrenches. In such applications, it is an important step forward to be able to omit the lubricant oil usually added to the motive pressure air, thereby avoiding pollution of the atmosphere. By omitting the oil additive, it is possible to keep the power tool handles clean of oil, thereby improving the grip safety and also avoiding allergic reactions from operators who are sensitive to oil.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a heavy duty vane is formed by a core of continuous aramid fibre layers which are impregnated by a polyamid matrix and two surface layers comprising continuous fibres of high modulus of elasticity, from for instance carbon or class, arranged in a cross pattern and impregnated by polyamid. This vane is illustrated.in Fig 3 where the core is designated 20 and the two surfacae layers 21, 22 sandwiching the core.
