Abstract
There is disclosed a fan assisted ventilation unit for extracting air from the interior of a building in the event of fire and at least partly constructed from light weight materials such as glass reinforced plastics, aluminium or light gauge steel, whose durability to meet Fire Regulations is assured by a coating of intumescent paint. Damper blades 20 are provided with sufficient clearance from non moving parts to accommodate expansion of the paint to a thickness of 2.5cm. <IMAGE>
Description
VENTILATION UNITS
This invention concerns ventilation units of the kind (hereinafter termed as the kind referred to) adapted to extract large volumes of air from the interior of a building and smoke laden air in the event of fire.
Fire Regulations require that units of the kind referred to are capable of continuous operation for a period of two hours at temperatures of 4000C.
To meet this specification it has been customary for such ventilation units to be constructed from steel, making them costly and heavy with attendant problems in their mounting on a factory roof or the like.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a relatively inexpensive and light weight ventilation unit which nonetheless meets the specification dictated by Fire Regulations.
According to the present invention there is provided a ventilation unit of the kind referred to characterized in that the surfaces of at least some of the parts thereof are coated with an intumescent paint.
The parts of the ventilation unit may be manufactured from any suitable material such as a glass reinforced plastics material, aluminium or relatively light gauge steel.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which shows a cross section through one form of ventilation unit embodying the invention.
Referring now to the drawing it will be seen that the ventilation unit comprises a cylindrical housing 10 extending upwardly from a mounting plate 11 adapted to be fitted over an aperture 12 in the roof 13 of a building. The housing 10 locates a fan impeller 14 connected by a drive shaft 15 to a drive motor 16.
The motor 16 is supported by bracket members 17 extending inwardly and downwardly from the underside of the plate 11.
Pivotted shutter members 18 are located within the housing 10 above the fan 14 and open against the influence of gravity by pivotting upwardly whenever fan 14 is operative to draw air from within the building for discharge through the housing 10.
The housing 10, shutters 18 and base plate 11 are all formed from glass reinforced plastics material whilst the bracket members 17 are formed from steel, as of course, is the impeller fan 14.
In accordance with the invention all of the glass reinforced plastics parts have those surfaces thereof which would be contacted by heated air expelled from the building in the event of fire with a coating 20 of intumescent paint. Additionally the surfaces of the bracket members 17 and casing to the motor 16 may also have a coating of intumescent paint.
We have found that a coating of intumescent paint as manufactured by Nullif ire Limited of Coventry applied at the rate of 1,800 grammes per square metre protects the parts of the ventilation unit sufficiently to provide continous operation thereof for 2 hours at temperatures of up to 4000C. This meets the specification required by Fire Regulations.
s
In use at high temperatures the paint expands to a thickness of some 2.5cm and the clearances between the moving and stationary parts of the ventilation unit must be designed to accommodate for this expansion.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
