Description

k_ fl 1 2200158 Profile-lined window construction, in particular for a
continuous window The invention concerns a window construction, in particular a so-called continuous-window construction, which comprises a wooden built-ln frame consisting of upper and lower horizontal parts of the built-in frame and of vertical lateral parts and vertical intermediate parts of the built-in frame, placed between the said horizontal parts, and of a possible solid part, if any, placed between the said vertical intermediate frame parts, the said solid part consisting of a wall construction with thermal insulation, and in which said window construction the circumferential outer faces are lined with a lining-profile set of metal or equivalent material, protecting the construction against the weather.
It is known in prior art to cover the wooden parts of doors and windows placed on the outside faces of buildings and subjected to the effects of weather and wind with a metal profile lining. _The said profiles are made, e.g., of aluminium, copper or plastic, and their function is to increase the service life of windows and doors, to reduce their maintenance costs, and in some cases also to improve their appearance.
1 In respect of the prior art related to the present application, reference is made by way of example to the EP Application No. 0,149,991, wherein it is described.that built-in frames of windows or doors_-'and casement frames of glass panes are lined with profiles shaped in a corresponding way. - In respect of the prior art most closely related to the present invention, reference is made to the Finnish Patent No. 48,871, wherein a profile set provided as a lining on built-in frames of doors and windows is described, in which said profile set the profile forming the lining of the upper built-in frame extends onto the^outer face of the casement frame of the 2 1 window. In the said Finnish patent, it is a novelty that each of the profile pieces of the built-in upper and lateral frames is provided with a. correspondingly shaped lining which is placed at some distance outside the window casement frame or equivalent and which covers the front faces of the upper and lateral pieces of the said casement frame completely. By means of -the invention of the said Finnish patent, it has been possible to protect the outside faces of the built-in frame and the casement frame of the windows and the slot between the frames so that snow, rain water, and moisture cannot penetrate to the inside of the window or between the window frame and the lining. In the said Finnish patent, the substantial advantage has also been obtained that the built- in frames of windows and doors and the casement frames can be protected by means of the same profile set, which lowers especially the labour costs, to some extent also the material costs.
The object of the present invention is a further development of the inventive idea suggested in the said FI Patent 48,871.
It is a particular.object of the present invention to provide such a novel window construction-as is suitable for use in so-called continuous windows. As is well known, continuous windows are horizontally elongate window constructions, whose length is maximally about 4 m, which length is determined mainly by reasons of manufacturing and transport technology. The wooden built-in frame of a continuous window consists of con- tinuous horizontal parts, between which there are vertical parts. The vertical parts include lateral vertical parts, intermediate frame parts, and possible solid parts, if any, which comprise a wall construction with thermal insulation between two vertical intermediate frames.
As is known in prior art, the said solid parts in continuous windows and/or portions of wall construction between two elements of continuous window are covered
1 3 9 with a glass pane mainly out of reasons of architecture in order to provide a glass face as unified as possible in the continuous window. The said glass coverings are fixed from both of their edges by means of frame profiles to the.vertical structural components of the solid part andlor to the wall construction.
As is known in prior art, on the said intermediate frames a profile has been used, which is, by its middle part, attached to the outer face of the inter- mediate frame and whose plane sides extend onto the frame profile of the window pane, on one hand, and onto the edge profile,of the glass covering of the said solid part, on the other hand, so that between the lining profile and the frame profile a gap of about 5 mm remains and that, behind the lining-profiles air spaces remain that are ventilated to a suitable extent, e.g., in accordance with the principles suggested in the PI Patent 48,871.
It is a drawback of the said prior-art construction of a continuous window that even though the solid parts can be covered with glass, the lining profiles will consist of a material different from the material of the window panes and the glass coverings on the solid part, which produces a heterogeneous construction of a continuous window, wherein different lining mat erials have been combined in a way unsatisfactory from the point of view of architecture. It is a further drawback that the said constructions of continous windows are relatively expensive both regarding their cost of manufacture and regarding their material cost.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the drawbacks coming out above and to provide a novel window construction, in particular a continous window construction, which is more advantageous than the prior-art constructions, both regarding its material and manufacturing costs and.regarding the architecture.
In view ofachieving the objectives given above and those that will come out later, the invention is 4 mainly characterized in - that the said vertical intermediate frames and/or vertical intermediate frames and a solid part or solid parts between them and/or the portions of wall construc- tion between two elements of continuous window are, from outside, covered by a lining glass pane, which is attached by means of fastening profiles or equivalent to the outside face of the vertical intermediate frame and/or to the outer wall of the solid part and/or to the outer wall of the wall construction, and --that the areas in the vicinity of both of the vertical edges of the said lining glass pane extend onto the frame profiles of the outside window panes so that a little vertical air gap remains between the latter parts, which said air gap opens itself into the air space remaining underneath the said lining glass pane, protected from weather.
In the invention, the solid parts and intermediate frame-parts in continuous windows as well as vertical portions of wall construction between elements of continuous window can be protected with a lining glass or equivalent so that a fully unified window construction is formed which gives an outward appearance of continuous glass, without any metallic or other vertical components.
Moreover, in the invention considerable economies of work and material are achieved as compared with corresponding prior-art constructions of continuous window.
In the following, the invention will be described in detail with reference to an exemplifying embodiment of the invention illustrated in the figures in the accompanying drawing, the invention being by no means strictly confined to the details of the said embodiment.
Figure 1 shows a part of a continuous window in accordance with the invention as a so-called facial view from outside.

To begin with, referring to Figures 1 to 8, a description will be given of the general construction of a so-called continuous window, which is largely known in prior art. A continuous window 20 comprises window panes 20a,20b,20c,20d, etc. placed side by side. A con tinuous window 20, whose length is, owing to construc tional and transport-technical reasons, at the maximum about 4 m, has a continuous wooden upper frame 21y and a corresponding lower frame 21a. The wooden vertical parts of the built-in frame consist of lateral vertical frames 21r and intermediate frames 21p. Between the window panes 20a and 20b, there is a solid part 30.
Between the window panes 20b and 20c, there is only a vertical frame 21p. Between the window panes 20c And 20d, there is a solid part 30, which is placed between vertical frames 21p. The solid part comprises a wall construction with thermal insulation, provided with a windshield board 34 outside the frame part 32, with _thermal insulation 33, and with a particle board 31 or equivalent at the inside face.
From outside the continuous window 20 is covered,by metal profiles protecting the wooden parts, the said profiles being preferably made of aluminium.
On the upper frame 21y there is a rectangular profile 40, 6 which is, at its fold 40a, fitted in a corresponding groove in the upper frame 21y. Correspondingly, the lower frame 21a is covered by a V-profile 43, which is# by its flange portion 43a, attached to the outside face of the lower frame 21a. The outer portion of the profile 43 extends to outside thewindow plane in a way in itself known.
As comes out from Fig. 7, the lateral vertical built-in frames 21r are covered by an aluminium profile 41, which is provided with an edge portion 41a that forms a gap space R with the frame profile 26 of the glass pane, so that a closed air space V is formed. The pro file 41 is attached, by the intermediate of its fastening parts-41b, to pieces of fastening profiles 43 attached to the outside face of the vertical built-in frame 21r, the number of the said pie ces of fastening profiles being two or more.
The casement frame part of the window comprises outer vertical frames 22p and inner vertical frames 23p, which are connected to each other, as well as lower frames 22a and 23a and upper frames 22y and 23y. A double glass 24 has been attached between the frames 22 and 23 as the inner window pane. A single outer window pane 25 has been attached to the outside face of the frames 23 by means of metallic frame profiles 26 and seals 26a.
In the following, the novel characteristic features of the invention will be described. As came out above, the object of the invention is to provide a synergism of outside protection of the vertical inter mediate parts of the window and of a.continuous window of higher homogeneity from the point of view of archi tecture, with an outer appearance of a continuous glass face. For the purposes given above, both a vertical frame 21p between the window panes 20b and 20c and a solid part 30 with its vertical frames 21p are covered with a glass lining' pane 10A and 10B. The fitting and i v 14 5r 11i 7 the fastening of the lining pane 10A come out best from Fig. 2. To the lining pane 10A, which extends between the upper and lower frames 21a and 21y, an inside fastening profile 12 is fixed, e.g., by means of an adhesive joint 11 or a corresponding screw joint or groove-projection fitting. The fastening' profile 12 is provided with outside fastening parts 13, which are attached to pieces of fastening profiles 14 by means of a snap fastener mechanism, the number of the said pieces of fastening, profiles being, e.g., two or more, attached to the out- side face of the vertical frame 21p by means of screws 14b or equivalent. Facing the profile 14, there are fastening parts 14a, which support the lower edge of the glass panes 10A and 10B and prevent the glass panes 10A and 10B from sliding down..The lining panes 10A and 10B are fixed only from their middle area either to the vertical frame 21p or, at both sides of the solid part 30 in a wall, to the vertical frames 21p. As the lining pane 10B covers the 20 solid part 30 between the panes 20a and 20b and between the panes 20c,20d, the lining panes 10B and their fastenings are symmetric relative the vertical centre plane K--K of the solid part 30 (Fig. 5). When fixed in their positions, the lining panes 10A;l0B form gap spaces R in the vicinity of both of their vertical edges, the width h of said gap spaces R being, as a rule, within the range of h = 2 to 5 mm, preferably h s:d 4 mm. The width of the gap spaces R in the horizontal plane L is, as a rule, within the range of L = 25... 40 mm. The gap space"s R are opened into the air spaces V, which remain between the vertical parts 21p of the built-in frame and the casement frame 23p. In the space V a protective air cushion is formed, for if considerable flow occurred in the gap space R, the flow velocity therein would become very high, and when discharged into the flow space V, the flow would cause a vortex, which would efficiently restrict the flow into X 8 the space V. The space V is, however, both in its lower part and in its upper part, ventilated so that a certain exchange of air takes place so that any moisture is removed. Owing to the dimensioning of the gap R, snow and water do not have access through the gap into the space V. If the gap h were exc6ssively large, i.e. h > 5 mm, water and snow culd have access through the gap R into the air space V. In the invention the lining glass panes 10A and 10B extend onto the frame profiles 26 of aluminium, so that a continuous glass face is obtained for the window over its entire width.
In the fastening of the lining glass panes 10A and 10B, adhesive fastening is preferable in the respect that the fastening components are not seen from outside and, thus, a continuous solid glass face is produced that extends from light to light and that has an attractive appearance.
In the invention the fastening of the lining glass panes 10A and 10B is quick, which gives economies in labour cost. By means of the invention, considerable economies of material are also obtained as compared with prior-art windows, in which, on solid parts of continuous windows, covering glasses fixed from both of their vertical edges have been used together with aluminium profiles fitted between the edge profile of the covering glasses and the vertical parts of the edge profile of the adjoining window.
In the following the patent claims will be given, whereat the various details of the invention may show variation within the scope of the inventive idea defined in the said claims and differ from the details given above for the sake of example only.
