Abstract
Hafnium and zirconium are separated by fractional crystallization or precipitation of their higher basic compounds such as Hf2O3CL25H2O, Hf2 O3 (NO3)2 5H2O and Hf2 O3 (SCN)2 5H2O and the corresponding zirconium compounds. Mixed zirconium and hafnium oxychlorides are dissolved in alcohol whereupon ether is added, the precipitate containing more Zr2 O3 Cl2 5H2O than corresponds with the p proportion of zirconium in the original mixture; or acetone or other suitable precipitant may be used instead of ether; or a solution of the mixed oxychlorides in a mixture of alcohol and ether may be treated with water, the precipitate in each case containing a higher proportion of zirconium than the original mixture. Hafnium and zirconium sulphocyanides are obtained by adding sulphocyanic acid to the hydroxides. Specifications 219,024 and 219,327, [both in Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c., Metallic], are referred to.ALSO:Hafnium and zirconium are separated by fractional crystallization or precipitation of their higher basic compounds such as Hf2O3Cl25H2O, Hf2O3(NO3)25H2O and Hf2O3-(SCN)2.5H2O and the corresponding zirconium compounds. Mixed zirconium and hafnium oxychlorides are dissolved in alcohol whereupon ether is added, the precipitate containing more Zr2O3-Cl25H2O than corresponds with the proportion of zirconium in the original mixture; or acetone or other suitable precipitant may be used instead of ether, the precipitate in each case containing a higher proportion of zirconium than the original mixture. The raw material may be first partially separated by means of the preparation and fractional separation of the oxychlorides, the process of the invention being applied to the oxychloride concentrate thus obtained.
