Description
SPECIFICATION
Roof ridge tile support device
This invention relates to a roof ridge tile support device.
Roof ridge tiles are usually provided at the apex of pitched roof structures. The tiles are arranged in a row along the roof structure.
Usually separate joining members are disposed between adjacent tiles.
One known way of supporting the ridge tiles is to provide two separate support members each extending along opposite sides of the roof ridge and each secured to the roof structure. Each edge of the roof ridge tile is supported by a respective one of the support members.
This arrangement has the disadvantage that the two support members have to be positioned very carefully during the construction of the roof ridge. This is because they must be disposed relative to one another at the correct distance to receive the roof ridge tile.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved roof ridge tile support device.
According to the present invention -there is provided a roof ridge tile support device for use in a roof structure having a roof ridge, comprising a first member adapted to be disposed on one side of the roof ridge structure, a second member adapted to be disposed on an opposite side of the roof ridge structure, and support means for supporting at least one roof ridge tile and/or for supporting at least one joining member disposed between adjacent tiles, wherein the first member is secured to the second member.
Advantageously, the first and second members are integral.
Preferably the support means comprises a support member secured to the first and/or second member.
The support means is desirably integral with the one of the first and second members to which it is secured, or integral with both the first and second members.
The first, second and support members are preferably secured together along an edge thereof, so that they extend outwardly from an axis.
The first, second and support members may be of elongate configuration, and their longitudinal axes may be parallel to the axis from which they extend outwardly.
In a preferred construction the support means further comprises at least one securing member adapted to be secured to, or integral with, the support member, and adapted to be secured to the roof ridge tile and/or the joining member.
The securing member and the support member are desirably secured together by cooperating formations provided thereon.
The cooperating formations may comprise a projection on the support member and a slot in the securing member, the projection being retained in the slot by retaining means.
The securing member can be provided with an aperture for receiving fixing means, which fixing means can be fixed to a part of the roof ridge tile and/or the joining member in order to secure the support means to the roof ridge tile and/or the joining member.
The aperture is preferably elongate so that the relative position at which the roof ridge tile and/or the joining member is secured to the support means can be varied.
Desirably the support means further includes a moisture baffle.
The moisture baffle may be adapted to be disposed on both sides of the roof ridge, at least partially over the first and second members.
Preferably the moisture baffle is provided on the support member, more preferably between the support member and the securing member.
The first and/or second member may be provided with ventilation apertures therein, and the moisture baffle may be disposed above said ventilation apertures.
The first and second members may be adapted to be secured to the sides of the roof ridge.
The support means may be adapted to support the or each roof ridge tile and/or joining member substantially centrally thereof.
In an alternative embodiment the support means may comprise an upper surface of the first and second members.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a roof ridge ventilator for ventilating an interior of a roof structure comprising a ventilating member adapted to be disposed between a roof ridge tile and a roof tile, and adapted to provide a ventilation path between the roof ridge tile and the roof tile, whereby the interior of the roof structure can be ventilated.
Advantageously the ventilating member is adapted to space the roof ridge tile from the roof tile in order to define the ventilation path.
The ventilating member is preferably provided with spacing formations which are adapted to engage either the roof tile and/or the roof ridge tile, and the ventilation path is desirably defined between adjacent spacing formations.
The ventilating member may comprise an elongate member having the spacing formations provided along at least one surface thereof.
The ventilating member may be adapted to bridge the roof ridge so that it can extend between the roof ridge tiles and the roof tiles on each side of the roof ridge.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of part of a roof ridge tile support device according to the invention, in position on a roof structure;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a partially exploded cross-sectional view of a roof ridge tile support device according to the invention;
Figure 4 is a non-exploded perspective view of the device shown in Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a roof structure incorporating a roof ridge tile support device according to the invention;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a plain tile roof structure including a roof ridge ventilator according to the invention; and
Figures 7 and 8 are perspective views of a curved tile roof structure including a roof ridge structure according to the invention.
In Figures 1 and 2 a roof ridge tile support device is generally designated 1.
The device 1 includes support means 2 which includes a support member 5; the support member 5 is integral with first and second members 3 and 4. In use, the support member 5 is arranged to extend upwardly from the first and second members 3 and 4.
The first and second members 3 and 4 define an angle therebetween which may be equal to at least twice the angle of the pitch of the roof structure.
The first and second members 3 and 4 are each provided with a plurality of elongate fixing apertures 6 juxtaposed in a row. Fixing means in the form of nails 7 are passed through the apertures 6 through sarking felt 8 and into the woodwork of the-roof structure in order to secure the device 1 to the roof structure (in Figure 2 the sarking felt 8 is
shown only on one side of the roof structure).
In this way the support device 1 is secured to the roof structure on each side of the roof ridge.
The first and second members 3 and 4 are also provided with ventilation apertures 9 which enable air to flow from an external envi
ronment to an interior 10 of the roof structure.
The support member 5 is provided with a formation in the form of a projection 13 which
is a snap-fit with a moisture baffle 11, the
baffle 11 includes two baffle members 12.
The projection 13 is provided with a circular
cross- sectional shape. The baffle members 1 2 are spaced from the first and second
members 3 and 4, and extend substantially
parallel thereto.
The baffle members 12 extend over the
ventilation apertures 9 and over the sarking
felt 8. Thus, any moisture flowing over the
baffle members 12 is deposited on the out
side of the sarking felt 8 rather than through
the ventilation apertures 9. This helps to pre
vent moisture from entering the interior 10 of
the roof structure.
The support means further includes securing means for securing the support device 1 to a roof tile; this is shown in Figures 3 and 4. For clarity, the apertures 6 and the ventilation apertures 9 have been omitted from Figures 3 and 4. Moreover, in Figures 3 and 4 the roof structure is not shown.
The securing means comprises a securing member in the form of a clip 14 for securing the device 1 to a roof ridge tile 18 (see Figure 5). The clip 14 includes a formation in the form of a slot 15 which receives the projection 13 and the recess 1 1a of the baffle 11.
Retaining means in the form of a screw 16 is provided for altering the size of the slot 15, so that the clip 14 can be retained securely in position on the baffle 11.
The clip 14 includes also an elongate aperture 16 through which a screw 17 can be passed to extend into part of the roof ridge tile 18 (see Figure 5), and/or a joining member 19, in order to secure the clip 14 thereto.
In Figure 5 the roof ridge tile support device 1 is shown in the roof structure. A plurality of the roof ridge tiles 18 (only one of which is shown) are juxtaposed in a row along the roof ridge. The roof ridge tiles 18 are joined together by joining members 19 which are disposed between, and secured to, adjacent tiles
18.
One or more of the joining members 19 may be in the form of a roof ridge ventilator as described in our copending U.K. Patent Application No. 8717344 entitled "Roof Ridge
Ventilator and Ventilated Roof Ridge Structure" filed on 22 July 1987.
The tiles 18 and/or the ventilators 19 are secured to the support device 1 by the clips
14.
Elongate battens 20 extend along opposite sides of the roof ridge and are secured to the woodwork of the roof structure by nails 21.
Roof tiles 22 are disposed between the battens 20 and the roof ridge tiles 18. The edges 18a of the roof ridge tiles are supported by the roof tiles 22.
In Figure 1 the air flow path is shown by arrow A, and the moisture flow path is shown by arrow B.
If desired a ventilator can be provided between the roof ridge tiles 18 and the roof tiles 22; this is shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8.
Figures 6 to 8 are similar to Figure 5 and like parts have been described with like reference numerals.
In Figure 6 a roof ridge tile ventilator 30 is disposed between the roof ridge tiles 18 and the roof tiles 22 and spaces the two from one another to define a ventilation path desig
nated by arrows C.
The ventilator 30 comprises an elongate
member 31 having a plurality of spacing for
mations 32 provided on a surface thereof.
The spacing formations 32 engage the roof
ridge tiles 18 and the ventilation path C is defined between adjacent formations 32; the surface of the elongate members 31 opposite to the surface having the formations 32 engages the roof tiles 22.
The elongate member 31 extends along both sides of the roof ridge and includes ventilation apertures 33. An air flow path into the roof structure is shown by arrows D.
The roof structure shown in Figures 7 and 8 are similar to Figure 1. The principle difference is that the plain roof tiles 18 have been replaced by curved roof tiles 100.
The elongate member 31 of the ventilator 30 includes a curved portion 34 which is shaped to match the shape of the roof tiles 100.
An air flow path into the roof structure is designated by arrows E.
