Abstract
A roof ridge cover, for use in place of a ridge tile, comprises an upper ridge portion 2, of similar appearance to a ridge tile, and a securing portion 3 which extends outwardly and downwardly from the upper ridge portion. The cover is positioned on the ridge of a roof, the upper ridge portion covering the upper ends of the uppermost tiles 4A on the roof and the securing portion extending from the upper ridge portion below the uppermost tiles. The weight of the tiles bearing on the securing portion acts to secure the ridge roof cover on the roof. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Roof ridge seal
This invention relates to a roof ridge seal for use especially but not exclusively on tiled roofs.
At present roof ridges are sealed by ridge tiles held in place by their own weight. In high winds these tiles are sometimes dislodged resulting in a loss of weather protection and expense to the householder.
An object of the present invention is to obviate or mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided a roof ridge seal for sealing the ridge of a tiled roof, comprising an upper ridge portion and a securing portion extending outwardly and downwardly from the upper ridge portion, in use the seal being positioned on the ridge of a roof, the upper ridge portion covering the free ends of the uppermost tiles on the roof, and the securing portion extending from the upper ridge portion below the uppermost tiles, the weight of the tiles acting to secure the roof ridge seal on the roof.
Preferably, the upper ridge portion is semicircular in cross-section and may have a similar appearance to a ridge tile.
Preferably also, the roof ridge seal is a single piece plastics extrusion.
Preferably also, air vents are provided in the roof ridge seal to allow ventilation of the space beneath the roof.
Preferably also, the roof ridge seal is provided with ties which attach to the roof trusses to give greater security.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is an end view of a roof ridge seal according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the joint between two lengths of a roof ridge seal according to the present invention;
Fig. 3 is an end view of a gable sealing board; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an eaves cover and gutter support.
Referring to Fig. 1, a roof ridge seal, shown generaily at 1 is in the form of a one piece plastics extrusion and comprises an upper ridge portion 2 and securing portions 3 The seal is positioned on the apex of a roof 5 which is covered with tiles 4.
The upper ridge portion 2 is generally semicircular in cross-section and may be coloured to suit the style of building and colour of tiles 4 used on the roof 5.
Ventilation slots 6, initially upwardly angled as at 7 to prevent rainwater ingress, are provided in the upper ridge portion 2. The slots 6 permit ventilation of the roof space 8 and are provided alternately of each side of the upper ridge portion 2.
Fixed to the upper ridge portion 2 are two generally planar securing portions 3. The securing portions 3 extend outwardly and downwardly from the upper ridge portion 2 under the topmost layer of tiles 4A, the weight of the tiles 4A acting to secure the roof ridge seal 1 on the roof 5.
Grooves 9 are provided in the upper ridge portion 2 adjacent the upper ends of the securing portions 3. The uppermost layer of tiles 4A are fitted into the grooves 9 and bedded in a suitable sealing material 14 to ensure a weatherproof seal.
Ties 12 on the seal 1 are fixed to roof trusses (not shown) to provide additional security.
Referring to Fig. 2, the seal 1 is produced in suitable lengths, adjacent lengths being joined by mortise and tenon joints 13 and sealed with a suitable sealing material 14.
Thus the roof ridge seal of the present invention provides a weathertight and secure replacement for the ridge tiles.
Referring to Fig. 3, there is shown a gable sealing board 15 in the form of a one piece plastics extrusion, for attachment to the gable end of a building. The board is self coloured, does not require painting and will not rot.
Referring to Fig. 4, an eaves cover and gutter support 16 in the form of an "L" shaped plastics extrusion is attached to the eaves of a building. The cover and support 16 is self coloured, does not require painting, and will not rot.
Modifications and improvements may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
1. A roof ridge cover for covering the ridge of a tiled roof, comprising an upper ridge portion and a securing portion extending outwardly and downwardly from the upper ridge portion, in use the cover being positioned on the ridge of a roof, the upper ridge portion covering the upper ends of the uppermost tiles on the roof, and the securing portion extending from the upper ridge portion below the uppermost tiles, the weight of the tiles acting to secure the roof ridge cover on the roof.
2. A roof ridge cover as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the upper ridge portion is of similar appearance to a ridge tile.
3. A roof ridge cover as claimed in either one of Claims 1 or 2, wherein the securing portion extends outwardly and downwardly from both sides of the cover.
4. A roof ridge cover as claimed in any one of Claims 1, 2 or 3, wherein a recess is provided between the upper ridge portion and the securing portion for receiving the upper edge portion of the uppermost tiles on the roof.
5. A roof ridge cover as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein the cover is
