Description
SPECIFICATION
Ridge Batten Support
The invention relates to a support for attaching a ridge batten to a roof structure. Such supports are known consisting of a U-shaped headpiece for engaging the ridge batten and a part connected with this headpiece and adapted to be attached to a part of the roof structure.
A known support of this kind (German
Gebrauchsmuster 74 39736) has a plate-shaped web extending perpendicularly to the U-shaped headpiece, which web may be provided with fixing holes and claw-like projections to fasten the support to wooden rafters. Thereby the support is first fixed provisionally by simply hammering in the claw-like projections; the ridge batten is then placed in position and, once the ridge batten has been correctly aligned or aligned with a tensioned cord, each support is permanently fixed in the correct position by screws or nails penetrating the fixing holes.
Supports of the kind described above are not always suitable for particular applications. For example, in the case of rafters with difficult access, for instance where there is an insulating layer on the rafters or a lower roof with counter battens or batten supports, it is sometimes impossible to fix the support quickly, simply and securely or to ensure good alignment for different roof pitches and roofing tiles.
The invention provides a support assembly for attaching a ridge batten to a roof structure, the assembly comprising a support having a channel shaped upper portion for supporting and engaging a ridge batten and a pair of diverging legs extending downwardly from the upper portion, and a mounting bracket for each leg for attachment to a part of the roof structure in which complementary interengaging connector means are provided on the legs and the brackets so that the legs may be engaged with the brackets in any one of a plurality of positions.
On the basis of such a construction the support can be fixed in each required position to the freely accessible top tiling batten above the thermal insulation tiles which may form part of the roof structure without affecting for instance an insulation layer laid on rafters which could create problems of thermal bridges when making cuts to lead through and fix the webs of the known supports.
Preferably the connector means comprise a plurality of teeth and slots on each leg and bracket, the slots on the two legs being formed in opposite edges of the legs.
A preferred embodiment is to shape the mounting brackets like angle pieces, one arm of which can be fasted to the upper side of the appropriate batten, the other arm to the side of the batten facing the ridge, whereby the part of the arm with the slots protrudes below the batten.
Finally, the diverging legs may be bent outward at several places which has the advantage of a particularly good adaptation to different roof pitches by fitting the varuous leg sections as parallel as possible to the existing batten pitch on the battens concerned in order to obtain as far as possible a right-angled intermeshing of the teeth of the diverging legs with those of the mountings.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the attached drawings in which
Figure 1 is a perspective exploded view of a support in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the support in accordance with Figure 1, finally installed on a roof with relatively low pitch,
Figure 3 is perspective view of the support in accordance with Figure 1 , fully mounted on a rood with a relatively high pitch and
Figure 4 is a front view of the headpiece and the diverging legs of the support in accordance with Figure 1, in which the bending of the legs is shown.
In the version illustrated in the drawings, channel-shaped headpiece 1 is formed of two bent sheet-metal strips which extend below the headpiece in the form of legs 2 diverging outward and which are connected to each other in the area of a web 3 in a suitable manner, for instance by spot welding. The diverging legs 2 are bent outward at three places and are provided at opposite side edges with a number of connectors 4 in the form of teeth 4a and slots 4b.
Each leg 2 is associated with a mounting bracket 5. The brackets are right angled, the upper arm of 5a of which has fixing holes 6 and is to be fastened with nails 7 to the top tiling batten 8 of a roof structure, while the other arm 5b rests against the side of the batten 8 facing the ridge.
The section of the arm Sb which projects below the batten is provided with connectors 9 corresponding to the connectors 4. the battens 8 are fixed to counter-battens 10 extending in the direction of the roof slope, which are placed above a thermal insulation layer 11 in turn supported by rafters of the roof in such a way that there is sufficient room for the sections of the legs 5b with the indented connectors 9 which project downward from the battens 8.
The fixing of the support can best be seen in
Figure 1 which illustrates on the right hand side one of the two angled mountings 5 in position for fixing to the right-hand top tiling batten 8. Into one slot of a connector 9 of the fixing mounting 5 a corresponding slot and tooth 4 at the height required for the ridge batten, on the appropriate right leg 2, is inserted sideways until the side edges of the leg 2 and the angled mounting 5 are aligned.
Then after fixing the left-hand batten 8 situated on the other side of the ridge, the left-hand mounting 5 which has the comb-like teeth at the opposite side edge of the leg 5b pointing downwards, is inserted into the correspondingly arranged teeth of the left leg 2 and the left mounting 5 is then fixed to the appropriate batten 8.
As can be seen from Figure 2, with a roof of about average pitch the centre sections of the diverging legs 2 rest almost parallel against the bottom side of the battens 8, whereby the slots of the angled mountings 5 engage with one each of the slots situated in this section of the comb-like teeth of legs 2.
Figure 2 also shows the ridge part of the roof construction, namely the rafters 13 supported on a purlin 12 and carrying an insulation layer 11. A ridge batten 14 is supported in the U-shaped headpiece 1 of the support, for the fixing of which batten fixing holes are provided in the vertical sides of the headpiece 1. Above the ridge batten 14 is a two-part sealing strip 1 6 which can be unrolled and which is covered by the ridge tiles 1 6 which can be fixed with nails to the ridge batten. The roofing tiles used are flat tiles 1 7 which are laid in the normal way on the battens 8.
In the arrangement in accordance with Figure 3 profiled tiles 1 8 are used as roofing tiles with a roof with a high pitch. In this case the diverging legs 2 of the support rest against the bottom side of the top battens 8 with the sectionimmediately below the U-shaped headpiece 1, whereby the teeth of the angled mounting 5 and of the diverging legs 2 interact correspondingly. As for the remainder, the construction corresponds to that described in conjunction with Figure 2 with the exception that, instead of the sealing strip 1 5, ridge caps 19 are provided on top of which ridge tiles 20 are laid and nailed to the ridge batten 14, which nailing is not shown here.
As can be seen from Figures 2 and 3, the diverging legs 2 cannot slip out of the mountings 5 when the support is fully fixed. Twisting of the support is prevented by the engagement of the ridge batten in the headpiece.
Figure 4 illustrates the divergence of the fixing legs 2, whereby the following dimensioning of the angles shown has proven to be practical for the most common roof pitches of 15 to 55 : a=220 p=142 and y=300 The example of embodiment described can of course be modified without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
Instead of the comb-like teeth on the diverging legs and mountings other indented connectors could be provided, for instance cams arranged on one or both sides of the diverging legs, which could engage in spring clips on the mounting fixable to the battens, and such like.
