Abstract

An adjustable length plank comprising a longitudinally extending pair of outer channel members 10 spaced apart by a plurality of upper and lower transverse members 11, located therealong to provide an outer assembly. A further pair of longitudinally extending inner channel members 13 are spaced apart by a plurality of further upper and lower members 14 located therealong to provide an inner assembly. Each of the inner and outer assemblies have a sheet-form member 12 & 15 located at least thereover and the inner assembly is slidably mounted within the outer assembly. Preferably the inner and outer longitudinally extending members may be metallic e.g. aluminium, and preferably each of the sheet-form members comprise chequer aluminium plate extending over and around the side edges of the inner and outer longitudinally extending members. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Adjustable length plank The invention relates to an adjustable length plank.
Adjustable length planks are known, for example as shown in United States patent specification No. 3,889,779 in which an inner member can be withdrawn from within an outer member and locked in a position extending therefrom. However, such plank assembly includes complicated locking and can be used only in the retracted or fully extended positions. Such planks have not been used extensively due to their high cost outwaying any advantages of flexibility of use, which has heretofore been limited.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate such disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided an adjustable length plank comprising a longitudinally extending pair of outer channel members spaced apart by a plurality of upper and lower transverse members located therealong to provide an outer assembly a further pair of longitudinally extending inner channel members spaced apart by a plurality of further upper and lower members located therealong to provide an inner assembly, each of the inner and outer assemblies having a sheet-form member located at least thereover and the inner assembly being slidably mounted within the outer assembly.
Preferably the inner and outer longitudinally extending members are metallic e.g. aluminium and preferably each of the sheet-form members comprise chequer aluminium plate extending over and around the side edges of the inner and outer longitudinally extending members.
In a preferred embodiment the outer longitudinally extending members are U-section and the inner longitudinally extending members are 1-section locating therein.
The foregoing and further features of the invention may be more readily understood from the foliowing description of two preferred embodiments thereof, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of an adjustable length plank of a first embodiment, and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of a modified embodiment of Fig. 1.
Referring now firstly to Fig. 1 of the drawing there is shown an adjustable length plank having an outer assembly comprising a pair of opposed longitudinally extending channel members 10 spaced apart by upper and lower transverse members 11 spaced therealong.
These members are all preferably formed of aluminium and a sheet 12 of chequer aluminium plate is located thereover. An inner assembly slidably located within the outer assembly comprises a pair of opposed longitudinally extending channel members 13 spaced apart by upper and lower transverse members 14 spaced therealong. A sheet 15 of chequer aluminium plate is located thereover.
The embodiment of Fig. 2 is similar to that of Fig. 1 except that the inner channel section member 13' are of "l"-section rather than "U"-section as in Fig. 1 which eases fixing of sheet 15 thereto.
With the embodiments shown the plank can be used in the retracted position or at an infinite number of extension positions up to the fully extended position at which a simple stop is provided. The plank members could alternatively be formed of a synthetic plastics or other light weight material.
1. An adjustable length plank comprising a longitudinally extending pair of outer channel members spaced apart by a plurality of upper and lower transverse members located therealong to provide an outer assembly, a further pair of longitudinally extending inner channel members spaced apart by a plurality of further upper and lower members located therealong to provide an inner assembly, each of the inner and outer assemblies having a sheet-form member located at least thereover and the inner assembly being slidably mounted within the outer assembly.
2. An adjustable length plank as Claimed in Claim 1 wherein the inner and outer longitudinally extending members are metallic.
3. An adjustable length plank as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein the sheet-form members comprise chequer aluminium plate extending over and around side edges of the inner and outer longitudinally extending members.
4. An adjustable length plank as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the outer longitudinally members are U-section and the inner longitudinally members are I-section locating therein.
5. An adjustable length plank substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
