Abstract
An ear stud for a domestic pet comprises a disc-shaped first portion (12) bearing identification symbols and attached to a pin section (20) which is received in hole (28) of a spherical second portion (14). The identification symbols comprise a printed code which can be interpreted using a centralised listing system to reveal the identity and address of the owner of the pet. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION Earstuds The present invention relates to ear studs and more particularly to ear studs usedforthe identification of animals.
A known system for identifying animals is adopted particularly for cows and consistsofaneartagwhich is clipped to the edge of the cows ear and is marked to identify the cow. A problem with this type of identification system is that if it were used for domestic pets such as dogs or cats the tag would either be torn out by the pet scratching or might catch on a projection and be ripped out thus severely damaging the pets ear. Also the operation of clipping the tag to the ear is fairly painful.
To overcome the problem of the ear tag being ripped out tattooing has been proposed. This is however expensive, painful to the pet and once the hair has grown back difficult to find and sometimes impossibleto read.
The present invention seeks to obviate the above disadvantages and to provide a method of pet identification which is easily found and read, is inexpensive to attach to the pet and is relatively cheap to apply.
According to the present invention there is provided an ear stud for a domestic pet comprising a first portion carrying identification symbols and a second securing portion for securing the first portion securely to the ear of the pet.
Preferably the first portion comprises a disc-like member with a pin attached thereto for penetration through the ear ofthe pet the pin being embedded into the securing member for permanent attachment to the ear.
The pin is preferably provided with a bulbous portion along its length for permanently joining the first and second portions. Preferably the second securing portion is spherical and is provided with a locating lugforaligning the pin with a lead hole in the second portion.
The present invention also provides a pet
identification system including a central computer in which a list of all owners of pets with ear studs attached is retained the list showing the name and address of each owner referenced against the
identification symbol on the pet.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be
described by way of example with reference to the
accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 diagrammatically shows a dog with an ear
stud according to the present invention attached; Figure2shows in side elevation an ear stud
according to the present invention priorto insertion
in the pets ear;
Figure 3 shows the pin of the stud of Figure 2
permanently embedded in the securing portion;
Figure 4shows a first version of the stud of Figure
1 in end elevation; and
Figures 5and 6 show a second and third versions ofthestud of Figure 1 in end elevation; and
Figures 7to 10 show a holder for the securing
portion.
With reference to Figure 1, the stud 10 is positioned in the pets ear as shown in a position where it is easily read but were it is not too close to the edge ofthe ear.
The stud shown in Figure 2 comprises a first identification portion 12 and a second generally spherical securing portion 14. The portion 12 is either formed integrally with or has permanently attached thereto a pin 16. The pin 16 which is preferably generally cylindrical in cross-section comprises a wide section 18 and a narrower section 20 with a bulbous portion 22 just prior to the end 24.
The portion 14 has a location lug 26 and in operation the lug 26 is located in one side of a press (not shown), the portion 12 is located in the other side and the pin 16 is punched through the ear of the pet thereby embedding itself permanently into the lead hole 28 in the securing portion 14.
With reference to Figure 3the bulbous portion 22 forces open the lead hole 28 and enters into the spherical portion 14. The hole 18 has a tendency because of the shape of portion 1 4to close back round the bulbous portion, as shown at 30 thereby permanently securing the stud.
The parts 12 and 14 may be of surgical quality steel and therefore the stud when inserted will be medically hygenic. Alternatively part 14 may be of nylon or similar hard plastics material. On the face of the portion 12 shown in Figure 3 identification symbols in this case letters may be already present.
The five letters present may be used to identify several million pets. With referenceto Figure6seven letters may be possible allowing over 300 million pets to be individually marked.
Each portion 12 may be pre-marked,the person attaching the stud mereiy writing the name and address of the owner on an appropriate card to be forwarded to a central computer or county computer record.
Typical sizes are A1 = 0.15 inch, A2 = 0.2 inch and
B = 0.20 inch and C = 0.2 inch but these could be reduced for small animals e.g. cats.
With reference to Figure 4 an alternative arrangement of the lettering allows a smaller diameter (B = 0.175 inch) stud to be used . This is particularly suited to cats or other small pets.
The stud when fitted can be readily found by any person finding a stray animal merely by examining
its ear. The portion 14 being spherical is not easily scratched by the animal . The length of the portion 18 ofthepin 16allowsclearanceforthestudonboth sides of the ear even after embedding through the
ear. This prevents undue health problems allowing airto getto both sides and the length allows a pair of sharp cutters to be used to cut through pin 16 is it is
necessary to removed the stud for any reason.
With reference nowto Figures7to lOthesecuring portion 14 is preferably pre-assembled into a holder
50 which is shown respectively in plan, longitudingal
cross section, underneath and cross section.
The securing portion 14 fits into a semi-spherical
hole 52 and is held in this hole by a frictional fit
against reasonable forces. Thus during travelling
packaging etc. the portion 14 stays in hole 52 and is
oriented correctly by pip 26 fitting into through hole 54.
The holder 50 is provided with a fork like projection 56 on the underneath side thereof which fits into a recess in one jaw of a gun (not shown). The stud loins positioned in the other jaw and on operation the pin 16 entersthe securing portion 14the alignment being accurate by correct dimensioning of holder 50.
The gun is preferably actuated by compressed air or other suitable means to punch the pin 16 sharply into securing portion 14 and then to quickly release thereby lifting securing portion 14 clear of hole 52. It is noted here that a channel 58 is provided to enable pip 26 to clear holder 50. The now empty holder 50 may then be removed from the gun and a new holder placed in position. The use of holder 50 ensures good sterility since securing portion 14 need not be directly handled. Also if any small amount of animal tissue is displaced by the punching operation it will tend to lodge on thetop surface 60 ofholder50and be thrown away.
