Description

SPECIFICATION Gloves and Mittens Field of the invention This invention relates to gloves and mittens.
Background of the invention A problem which exists with known gloves and mittens is that of making them both warm and waterproof. Warm gloves and mittens are generally made from a material which is inherently not waterproof and often by a method leaving non waterproof seams. Thus although, say, knitted gloves and mittens usually have no seams, the material is inherently non waterproof. More water resistant materials such as leather or sheepskin are usually sewn together, so that both the material and the seams are not entirely waterproof.
Such gloves and mittens are adequate for many occasions, but there are situations in which the fact that the gloves or mittens are not completely waterproof, limits their usefulness. Some examples are winter sports and games, sailing and moter cycling. Children's enjoyment of the snow is often marred by cold hands produced by playing snow balls and building snow men in gloves which are warm when dry but become wet by such use.
Particularly in this last example, it would be advantageous if a waterproof glove or mitten could be made inexpensively.
Summary of the Invention To overcome these problems, in accordance with my invention I provide a glove or mitten having an integral waterproof one piece outer made from rubber or plastics material, and having a warm inner lining. The outer is preferably moulded.
Moulding the glove or mitten enables it to be made from plastics or rubber, which is inherently waterproof, and without seams which leak in prior known gloves and mittens.
The lining which is preferably considerably thicker than the rubber or plastics material of the outer, may be fleecy, knitted, or a foamed plastics material, for example. In the latter case, the lining may itself be moulded.
The lining, which may be made as a traditional glove or mitten lining, essentially and inner glove or mitten, may be attached to the moulded outer by stitching at the wrist or cuff. Since this is the very edge of the glove or mitten, the stitching does not interfere significantly with the waterproofness of the glove or mitten.
Alternatively, the plastics or rubber may be moulded directly onto the lining.
Brief Description of the Drawing An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic part cross section through a glove embodying the invention.
Detailed Description of the Drawing The glove 2 illustrated in the drawing has an outer 4which is made by moulding in on piece from a flexible plastics or rubber material. The material of the outer is preferably also somewhat elastic enabling the glove to stretch comfortably in use.
The material and manner in which the outer is made leads to it being essentiaily completely waterproof.
As will be appreciated, the outer although water (and wind) proof, will not be especially warm. To provide warmth the glove has a lining 6. In the example illustrated, the lining is sewn together from pieces, cut to a pattern, of fleecy material and is considerably thicker than the material of the outer.
The fact that the material of the lining is not waterproof and that it is sewn together does not render the glove as a whole non waterproof in view of the waterproof outer 4.
The outer and the lining are attached only at the wrist or cuff by stitching illustrated shcematically by stitches 10. The position of the stitching ensures that the waterproof integrity of the glove is not interfered with. Alternativeiy, the lining 6 may be stuck in the outer 4 using a suitable adhesive. In another alternative, the outer may be welded, say ultrasonicaily, to the lining 6.
The glove may be in the form of a gauntlet (not illustrated) and in this form or in that shown may be elasticated at the wrist.
1. A glove or mitten having an integral waterproof one piece outer made from rubber or plastics material, and having a warm inner lining.
2. A glove or mitten as claimed in claim 1, wherein the rubber or plastics material is moulded to form the integral outer.
3. A glove or mitten as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the lining is fleecy.
4. A glove or mitten as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the lining is foamed plastics material.
5. A glove or mitten as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the lining is knitted.
6. A glove or mitten as claimed in claim 3 or 5, wherein the outer is moulded onto the lining.
7. A glove or mitten as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the wrist of the glove or mitten is elasticated.
8. A glove or mitten substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
