Abstract
A barrier for closing a passage, comprising at least two uprights (1,2) joined by two parallel horizontal cross bars (3). The barrier is characterised in that the uprights and cross bars are made from the same metallic profile in the general shape of an OMEGA , the uprights and the cross bars being positioned and assembled back to back through the medium of two wings (5, 6) from this profile, which are situated in the same plane and through which the means of fixing (8) pass. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Barrier for closing a passage
The invention relates to a barrierforciosing a passage, hereinafter called simply a gate.
It is aimed to improve the speed of manufacture of gates made from metal profile and especiallytheir assembly in order to reduce production costs, at the same time to enhance the strength of the assembly and particularly the rigidity of the different elements which make up the gate, and finally to improve their effectiveness in avoiding the collection of rainwater which leads to corrosion despite the fact that the profiles used are generally galvanised or precoated.
To this end the invention relates to a gate comprising at least two uprights joined by parallel horizontal cross bars, wherein the uprights and cross bars are all made from the same metallic profile having the general-shape of anw the uprights and the cross bars being positioned against and fixed to each otherthrough the medium of two coplanar wings of this profile.
The profile may have raised orfolded-overedges along the free sides of its wings.
The central part of thexprofile preferably has in section the general shape of an isosceles trapezium.
Atthesideofthegatewhich is to be hinged a pair of hinge elements may be fixed to the ends of respective said cross-bars. To facilitate this fixing, each hinge element may have an elongate fixing portion having a bent or curved sectional profile matching that of a portion of said central part ofthe profile.
The invention is represented by way of the non-limiting example on the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view from the front of a gate according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section of the profile used to make the gate of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an elargement of part A of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view of a part of the gate, as seen from the left of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a cross section of a modified profile which can be used to make the gate.
Figure 6 is a plan view of a preferred form of hinge element for hinging the gate;
Figure 7 is a front elevational view of the hinge elementfixed to a crnss-bar of the gate, and
Figure 8 is a sectional view showing a part ofthe hinge fixed to a cross-barofthegate.
The gate shown consists of two uprights 1 and 2 joined to each other by cross bars 3, of which the lower bars are preferably closerto each other, and by one ortwo diagonal bars 4 intended to further improvetheassemblyandthe rigidityofthe elements as well as the flatness of the gate.
In the example shown, the gate comprises a single element, and one side of the gate carried hinge elements 9 (to be described later), the other side carrying the locking mechanism of a boltorsome other means. This gate is made using a single galvanised metallic profile (see Figure 2) which at one and the same time provides the uprights and the cross bars, this profile being realised in the general shape of any and consisting of two flat wings 5 and 6, situated in the same plane, joined by a central zone in the form of an isosceles trapezium, the two free sides of the wings 5 and 6 being providedwith raised edges 5, and 6i respectively, which project from the same side of this profile as the central zone 7.
As a result of this construction, the two wings 5 and 6 situated in the same place of a profile element can be pressed against and fixed in back-to-back fashion to the two wings of another profile element to constitute a rigid assembly.
The uprights 1 and 2 and the diagonal profiles 4Of the barrier could thus be orientated in a direction so thattheirwings come to position themselves on the wings of the bars 3 orientated in the opposite sense.
Astrong and rigid assembly of the elements ofthe profile can be achieved rapidly, economically, for example, by using rivets 8.
As shown, these rivets could number four for each assembly, these four rivets being positioned at the corners of a square, so that each wing of one ofthe profile elements is fixed to each wing of the other profile. The diagonal 4 can be fixed to the cross bars 3 attheir intersections in a similar way.
This arrangement guarantees perfect rigidity of the gate and hence its good performance overthe course oftime.
The raised edges 51 and 61 are lower than the central trapezoid 7, so that the gate does not present a sharp-edged side, which could injure animals. To reduce evenfurtherthe likelihood of animals being injured by the edges Si and 6i, the profile could be modified byfoldingthese edgesflatagainstthe wings5and6,asshown in Figure 5.
Furthermore, the trapezoid shape ofthe central area in both the Figure 2 and the Figure 5 profiles avoids the accumulation of water and therefore oxidation and corrosion of the profile.
The hinge elements 9 in the illustrated embodiment are adapted to be fixed to the ends of respective ones of the cross-bars 3. For this purpose, each element 9 is made from metallic strip of which an elongate fixing portion loins formed into a curved or bent profile matching that of a mid-portion ofthe centre part of thezprofile. The remaining portion 11 of each element9 projects laterally from the edge of the gate and terminates in a hinge knuckle 1 2for accommodating a vertically projecting hinge pin P fixed to a gate post G. As shown in Figures 7 and 8, the hinge element 9 can be fixed to the cross-bar 3 by locating the fixing portion 10 against and alongside the outer face of the mid-portion of the profile centre part. Asinglethroughfixing 13 e.g. a rivet or bolt is sufficient to hold the hinge element fixed, though a plurality of such fixings may, of course, be used if desired. Although in the illustrated arrangement the fixing portion 10 overlies the convex side ofthe profile centre part, it would be possible with some dimensional modification for it to lie againstthe inner, concave side of this centre part.
