Abstract
218,718. Marks, E. C. R., (Libbey Glass Co.). April 5, 1923. Glass furnaces.-Molten glass is refined at a temperature below the proper working temperature and is then passed to a working or gathering pool where it is reheated. A furnace plant for carrying out the process comprises a melting-tank A separated from a refining-chamber B by a bridge wall, and one or more working or gathering tanks C, fed from the refining-ehamber through ducts 19, 20 which may be heated when necessary by burners 24. The refining-chamber is screened from the heat of the melting-chamber by a checkerwork wall 18 built on the bridge, and it may have hoods 56 through which molten glass may be fed or withdrawn. The, gathering tank is heated by burners 38, to which hot air is supplied by flues 28, and the combustion products are exhausted through flues 31 at the opposite end. The point at which the. glass is gathered is preferably remote from the inlet 20, for example, the two points are situated more or less diagonally as shown. The connection between the tanks A and B is below the surface of the molten glass, and that between the tanks B and C is arranged to cause a surface flow of glass, the levels in the three tanks being the same.
