Abstract

A fan installation for a room combines air circulation and filtration by providing an axial flow fan 10-12 which is suspended from the ceiling on chains 28 and draws air downwards through a filter 13, which removes particulates and may be perfumed. The installation may also support electric lamps 21 within a decorative device, such as a ring 25 supporting rows of beads 26 which move in the air current. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Fan installation This invention relates to a fan installation particularly, but not exclusively, an installation which may include a light and air filtration means for use in rooms.
It is known to provide fans for filtering the air entering or leaving a room. In some cases such fans may be intended to effect some air circulation in a room.
An object of the invention is to provide a fan installation which is an improvement over existing installations.
According to the invention a fan installation comprises a fan, an air inlet to the fan, air filtering means disposed in said inlet whereby to filter particles from the air passing to the fan, a fan housing incorporating the fan and the air filtering means, and mounting means for mounting the house in a room suspended from the ceiling or a wall, whereby the air in the room is circulated and filtered.
Preferably a lighting facility is carried on the housing and the lighting facility may include a chandelier with movable decorative elements.
Conveniently the fan is an axial flow fan located in a generally circular fan housing.
The air filtering means may be located in the air inlet to rest in a pocket defined around the inlet.
Conveniently lighting fittings are mounted below the fan housing and the air is directed downwardly by the fan and the fan housing supports outwardly directed arms on which lighting fittings and decorative elements are carried.
The decorative elements may include a ring carried on radial arms, and the ring having suspended thereon movable decorative elements.
The movable decorative elements may be suspended beads which are moved by the air flow from the fan. The air flow may also pass over the lighting facility to keep it relatively cool.
The ring may be removably mounted.
Further features of the invention appear from the following description of an embodiment of the invention given by way of example only and with reference to the drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section, and Figure 2 is an enlarged view of part of the installation of Fig. 1 in section.
Referring to the drawings a combined air circulation/filtration installation fitted with illumination means is shown.
The illustrated installation is intended for ceiling mounting and has a fan housing 10 of generally cylindrical shape and in which radial flow fan blades 11 are rotated by a motor 12.
As shown the blades 11 rotate to draw air into the housing from above through an inlet in which is located a filter unit 13.
The filter unit 13 may take any convenient form which will filter out particles in the air.
The unit 13 is mounted removably in a pocket 14 at the upper end of the housing 10. The unit 13 is easily lifted out for replacement and is supported by a permeable support member 15. Perfume may be impregnated in the filter unit.
The housing 10 carries at its lower end a lighting unit 16 disposed around the outlet 17 from the fan. The unit 16 includes three equally spaced radially-directed arms 19 on each of which is carried an electrical light fitting 20. Light bulbs 21 are located in the fittings 20 at positions such that the air from the fan passes over the bulbs to keep them relatively cool and prolong their life.
The outer ends of each arm 19 carries a block 22 of electrically insulating material having a peg 23. The blades 22 and pegs 23 support a ring 24 through apertured brackets 25, the brackets resting on the blocks 22 with the pegs 23 in the apertures so that the ring 24 is easily lifted on and off the arms.
Around the lower edge of the ring 24 are suspended rows of beads 26 on flexible chain 27 or thread whereby the beads 26 may move under the influence of the air flow from the fan.
The installation is arranged for suspension from the ceiling on chains 28 secured to the housing 10.
It will be appreciated that the beads 26 produce a chandelier effect but the beads may be replaced by other decorative chandelier elements or other decorative lighting means such as shades.
The installation provides air circulation when suspended or otherwise fixed in a room in addition to the air filtration action. Moreover when fitted with movable decorative elements the air movement causes the elements to move and enhance their decorative effect.
1. A fan installation which comprises a fan, an air inlet to the fan, air filtering means disposed in said inlet whereby to filter particles from the air passing to the fan, a fan housing incorporating the fan and the air filtering means, and mounting means for mounting the housing in a room suspended from the ceiling or a wall, whereby the air in the room is circulated and filtered.
2. An installation according to claim 1 wherein a lighting facility is carried on the housing.
3. An installation according to claim 2 wherein the lighting facility includes chandelier means with movable decorative elements.
4. An installation according to any one of claims 1-3 wherein the fan is an axial flow fan located in a generally circular fan housing.
