Abstract
Dilute acetic acid, such as fermentation acid, crude pyroligneous acid, or the by-product from acetylation processes is concentrated by extraction with a solvent insoluble or nearly insoluble in water and with a considerably higher boiling point p than acetic acid. The extraction is preferably carried out counter-current-wise in an extraction column and the extract is distilled, the first fraction consisting of comparatively dilute acetic acid which is returned to the process and the major portion of the distillate being acetic acid of 70-80 per cent strength suitable for direct conversion into glacial acetic acid. Suitable solvents are organic liquids containing oxygen and of boiling-point higher than 150 DEG C., such as cresols and their homologues, aliphatic ketones or fatty-acids, or mixtures of these bodies, and heavy wood tar oils, and the process is exemplified by the use of crude cresol, beech wood tar oil and anthracene oil. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to the use as solvents of polyvalent phenols and their ethers such as guaiacol, hydrogenated phenols such as hexahydrocresols, cyclic ketones, and brown and black coal tars and gives an example using hydrogenated tar cresol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
