Abstract

The bench (1) comprises a flat container formed in two sections (1a, 1b) which are movable between a closed position facing one another and an open position in which they are held in a common plane and supported above the ground by a pair of laterally extended legs (6,7) which are pivotally connected to the sections (1a, 1b) and contained therein when the sections are in the closed position, for carrying purposes. The leg (7) may be telescopically adjustable and the feet (8) of each leg may contain telescopically extendable members (9) which are retained in their retracted positions by ball catches (10). Padded foot rests (11) are also provided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Portable exercise bench This invention relates to the promotion of physical fitness by the provision of apparatus in the form of a portable bench on which various exercises can be performed.
This portable bench essentially comprises a flat container formed in two sections which are movable between a closed position facing one another and an open position in which they are held in a common plane and supported above the ground by a pair of laterally extended legs which are pivotally connected to the sections and contained therein when the sections are in the closed position.
Preferably the sections are pivotally connected at one end and the legs are permanently pivotally attached to the other end of the respective sections.
Preferably at least one of the legs is adjustable for length and equipped with laterally directed foot rests. Also the lateral extent of the legs may be adjustable.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is here inafter described by reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 'shows the portable exercise bench in a partly unfolded position preparatory to use; Figure2 2 shows a fixed length support leg; Figure 3shows an adjustable length support leg provided with foot rests; Figure4showsthe bench being carried; and Figure 5shows the bench when in use.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a portable exercise bench 1 comprising a flat container formed in two sections la, which are of equal size and shape with padded external base surfaces 2. The sections are pivotally connected at one end by hinges 3 and are closable one upon the otherfortransit. The sections have interlocking catch parts 4for holding them in their closed position and the section ib has atonesideahandle5forcarrying purposes as shown in Figure 5. Conveniently each section is about 50cm in length about30cm in width and 3-1/ 2cm inside depth butthese dimensions may be varied as desired.
The sections have a box section frame and pivotally attached centrally of the free end of sections 1 a, 1 bare two tubular legs 6, 7, respectively. These legs havetubular lateral extensions orfeets which con- tain telescopically extendable members 9 which are retainable in their retracted positions by ball or sim ilar catches 10. Each unextended foot is about 15cm in length. The legs are of unequal size andtheshorter leg 6 has a fixed length of about 30 cms. The other leg 7 however, as shown in Figure 3, is in two parts 7a, 7b telescopically mounted one with another so as to be extendablefrom a length of 45cms upto a length of about85cms.Thus the part7b has a series of holes7c selectively engageable with a ball catch 7d or similar on the part 7a. The part 7a carries two laterally extending externally padded foot rests 11 each about 12cms in length. The sections 1a and lb are unfoldable into a common plane as shown in Figure 4 and are retainable in such position by a tethered pin 12 inserted into the then aligned holes 13 in the sections 1a,1b.
The range of outward pivotal movement ofthe legs 7 and 8from the sections la, 1b is restricted in any suitable manner, such as by means of fixed stops on the sections or the legs so that the legs 7,8 assume the positions, relative to their sections, shown in Figure 4. Pins however could possibly be provided enabling the angular positions ofthe legs to be adju- sted.
1. A portable exercise bench comprising a flat container formed in two sections which are movable between a closed position facing one another and an open position in which they are held in a common plane and supported above the ground by a pair of laterally extended legs which are pivotally connected to the sections and contained therein when the sections are in the closed position.
2. A portable exercise bench comprising a flat container formed in two sections which are pivotally connected at one end and movable between a closed position facing one another and an open position in which they are held in a common plane and supported above the ground by a pair of laterally extended legs which are permanently pivotally connected to the free ends of the sections and are contained within the sections when the sections are in the closed position.
3. A portable exercise bench in accordance with Claim 1 orClaim 2 in which the legs are of different length.
4. A portable exercise bench in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein at least one of the legs is adjustable for length.
5. A portable exercise bench in accordance with anyof Claims 1 to4wherein one ofthe legsisfitted, intermediate its ends, with laterally directed foot rests.
6. A portable exercise bench in accordance with any of Claims 1 to 5 in which the laterally extended part of at least one of the legs is telescopically extendable.
7. A portable exercise bench constructed substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
