Abstract
A building frame for a window or door includes a lower sill or tread member 11, an upper head member 13 and two side jamb members 12 joined together at their ends so as to form a rigid rectangular frame which is sufficiently rigid to serve as a template or former for brickwork to be laid around it. The members are flanged and dimensioned so as to form a damp proof course between the brickwork 16, 17 and a door or window frame 22 to be fitted in the building frame. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Building frame for windows or doors
This invention relates to a building frame intended to be incorporated in the wall of a brick building whilst it is being built so as to assist in the squaring and sizing of the brickwork, and to provide means by which a window or door frame may be subsequently installed in position.
The present invention consists in a building frame which includes a lower sill or tread member, an upper head member and two side jamb members joined together at their ends so as to form a rigid rectangular frame which is sufficiently rigid to serve as a template or former for brickwork to be laid around it, wherein the members are flanged and dimensioned so as to form a damp proof course between the brickwork and a door or window frame when fitted in the building frame.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a general view of part of one form of building frame according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross-section through a sill member of the frame after installation.
Figure 3 is a cross-section through a head member of the frame after installation, and
Figure 4 is a cross-section through a jamb member of the frame after installation.
In carrying the invention into effect according to one convenient mode by way of example, Fig. 1 shows a building frame which includes a sill member 11, of L-shaped crosssection, welded at each end to the lower ends of jamb members 12, of L-shaped crosssection, the upper ends of the jamb members 12 being connected to the ends of a head member 13, of L-shaped cross-section, by welding to L-shaped brackets or cleats 14 thus forming a rectangular building frame. Additional rigidity is given by L-shaped brackets or cleats 15 welded between the lower end of each jamb 12 and an end of the sill member 11.
The building frame is dimensioned to accommodate a window frame and window and is installed in a brick building at the appropriate moment as the bricks are laid so as to form a permanent template enabling the brickwork to be formed accurately and squarely. The frame is made sufficiently strong and rigid to withstand the hard knocks normally associated with building site works and remains perfectly square so that a factory-finished window and frame can be inserted easily and quickly at a later date in the construction programme. This prevents damage to sensitive materials and/or finishes and enables more work to be done off-site to speed the construction process.
The building frame is of galvanised metal and provided with a bitumen finish and is dimensioned and designed to incorporate all the requirements of damp proof courses normally provided for windows in buildings to prevent the movement of moisture from outside to inside the building and from the brickwork to the window frame.
As shown in Fig. 2, the horizontal flange of the side member 11 overlays the uppermost brick 16 of the outer cavity wall 17 and the vertical flange of the sill member 11 is interposed between the uppermost brick and the cap 18 of the inner cavity wall 19. The sill member 11 is bedded on mastic 20 and the bitumen finish 21 on the building frame serves as a damp proof course between the window frame 22 and the brick 16 and between the brick 16 and the cap 18 of the inner casing wall.
During installation, when the bricklaying has reached the level of the head member 13, as shown in Fig. 3, a composite steel cavity lintel 23 is secured to the head member 13 by screws at 24 upon which successive courses of the inner and outer cavity walls 17 and 19 are laid. A fillet 25 of flexible mastic is provided between the window frame 22 and the lintel 23, and the bitumen finish on the head member 13 serves as a damp proof course between the window frame and the inner cavity wall 19.
Figure 4 shows the coating of the jamb member 12 serving as a damp proof course between the window frame 22 and the inner and outer cavity walls 17 and 19. A fillet 26 of flexible mastic is provided between the window frame 22 and the outer cavity wall 17.
It is preferred that the window frame should be secured to the building frame by means of clips (not shown) or similar fixing devices so as to avoid piercing the damp proof course.
Although the invention has been described by way of example with reference to a building frame intended to receive a pre-formed window frame and window, it will be appreicated that with suitable modifications a building frame may be adapted to receive a door frame and door or other like components which are preferably added to the brickwork after it has been laid.
it is particularly convenient to arrange for the head member 13 to be secured to a separate lintel but, of course, if it is desired the head member itself could be fashioned as a lintel forming part of the building frame.
1. A building frame which includes a lower sill or tread member, an upper head member and two side jamb members joined together at their ends so as to form a rigid rectangular frame which is sufficiently rigid to serve as a template or former for brickwork to be laid around it, wherein the members are flanged and dimensioned so as to form a damp proof
