Abstract

217,618. Redmayne, L., (Williams, F. H., and Weatherall, M. E.). Jan. 15, 1923. Solid fed to generating chamber washed by movements of liquid therein; purifying acetylene.-The feed-pipe 12 through which the carbide is introduced into the generator, is carried by the gas-holder 2 and enters an upstanding conical pipe 13 so as to form therewith a gradually-narrowing annular passage; the carbide falls on to a perforated grid 20, and the gas as it rises through this annular passage produces a circulation of water in the generator, a circulating duct 17 leading to the space below the grid being provided for this purpose. The grid is rocked by a lever 21, and the sludge is discharged at intervals through a duct 18 and cock 22 into a settling tank 23 provided with a filterpartition 24; the filtered liquid is returned to the generator. Carbide is introduced by means of a chamber 5 at the upper part of the tube 12 and provided with a cover 6 and sliding door 7. Gas is withdrawn from the holder through a pipe 25 and is purified by passage through kerosene in the lower part of a vessel 29 and through cotton wool resting on a partition 28 in the upper part of the vessel.
