Abstract
An abrasive strip cartridge file comprises two main components which are interchangeably connected, an abrasive strip cartridge 12 and a carriage 10 one face of which supports the abrasive strip and has at one end means of attachment of the cartridge and at the other end a means 23,24 of releasably securing the abrasive strip to the carriage, a selection of carriages being available with various forms and coverings on the working surface. The cartridge which is preloaded with abrasive material contains means of controlling the flow of abrasive from the cartridge, a selection of cartridges being available with various grades within. With the selection of a suitable carriage and a cartridge containing the desirable grade of abrasive it is attached to the carriage by the means provided, activate the means of controlling the flow of abrasive from the cartridge, draw the abrasive from the cartridge over the working surface to the opposite end where it is releasably secured to the carriage. When the exposed section becomes worn and ineffective it is replaced by fresh material from within the cartridge. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Abrasive strip cartridge file
This invention relates to an abrasive strip cartridge file.
The present invention relates to an abrasive implement of the type in which a strip coated with abrasive material such as sandpaper, abrasive cloth, and the like is securely held against a surface of a body or block so that the latter may be conveniently grasped by the user and employed in various abrading operations. Implements of this general class are widely used in the home and in various industries and generally comprise some sort of body or block, with means for clamping an abrasive strip against the working surface.
Many include a chamber or receptacle for a reserve supply of abrasive strip material in coiled form. The object of the invention is interchangeability allowing the user to change cartridges when a change of grade of abrasive is desired or when same becomes exhausted or a change of carriage, to suit the surface being abraded.
According to the present invention there is provided an abrasive strip cartridge file comprising a carriage in the form of a suitably shaped rectangular block one face of which supports the abrasive during use, a cartridge containing a reservoir of abrasive cloth or paper, the cartridge containing a means of releasably securing the abrasive strip to the cartridge in such a manner as to provide controlled distribution of the abrasive strip from the cartridge by an action of releasing and resecuring of the abrasive strip to the cartridge, means for releasably securing the cartridge to the carriage, the carriage having a means of releasably securing the abrasive strip to the carriage at or adjacent the opposite end to the end that receives the abrasive strip cartridge.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a typical form the carriage may take in accordance with the invention
Figure 2 shows sections through centre of various forms the supporting face of the carriage may take. A convex, B concave, C flat,
D a carriage covered with a rubber like substance which would conform to the surface being abraded.
Figure 3 shows a cartridge that works in conjunction with carriage in Fig. 1.
Figure 4 shows an abrasive strip cartridge file carriage and cartridge attached the dotted lines illustrating the reservoir compartment of the cartridge and the channel that arrests the sliding movement of the abrasive along the carriage,
Figure 5 illustrates a carriage with a compartment in the underside which is covered by an hinged lid 28.
Figure 6 illustrates a means of aligning the cartridge with the carriage by step 27 arresting the sliding movement of the cartridge.
With reference to the drawings the abrasive strip cartridge file comprises a carriage 10 in the form of a suitably shaped rectangular block one face of which supports the abrasive during use, a cartridge 14 containing a resevoir of abrasive strip 21 the cartridge containing the means of controlling the flow of abrasive from the cartridge.
An abrasive strip cartridge preloaded with abrasive strip one end of which protrudes through slot 12 in cartridge, is releasably secured to the carriage by sliding the cartridge into location 25 on the underside of the carriage, the cartridge being aligned with the carriage by step 27 arresting the sliding movement of the cartridge. The means of releasing the abrasive strip from the cartridge is activated by depressing button 22 protruding through cartridge wall which allows the abrasive strip to be drawn from the cartridge over and along the working surface of the carriage, to the opposite end where it returns to underside. By releasing the button 22 the abrasive strip is resecured to the cartridge the free end being trapped in slot 23 by flying wedge 24 being swung down into slot 23.When exposed section becomes worn and ineffective release flying wedge tear off worn section and repeat above procedure.
A selection of cartridges preloaded with differing grades of abrasive would be provided if during use a change of grade of abrasive became desirable by releasing flying wedge sliding cartridge out of its location, pressing button 22 the abrasive can be rewound back into cartridge by rotating same while keeping button depressed, a new cartridge with the approriate grade of abrasive can then be attached to the carriage.
There would also be provided a selection of carriages which would have various forms on the working surfaces to meet varying abrading conditions.
An example of releasably securing the abrasive strip 21 to cartridge as illustrated in the drawings, abrasive strip 21 is releasably secured to spring loaded splined spindle 17 by split bush 18 sliding over splined spindle 17 trapping the end of abrasive strip in slot in splined spindle, the end of abrasive strip being at that point only as wide as spiined spindle 17 as not to interfere with teeth 15 on splined shaft 16 when pressed. Spring loaded splined spindle 17 meshes with splines of shaft 16, shaft 16 being releasably secured to cartridge by teeth 15 on shaft 16 meshing with teeth 13 in cartridge wall, when end cap 20 is pressed into its location pring 19 exerts pressure on splined shaft 16 keeping teeth 1 5 on shaft 16 in mesh with teeth 13 in cartridge wall releasably securing abrasive strip to car tridge, by pressing end of shaft 16 protruding through cartridge wall shaft 16 and splined spindle 17 become free to rotate in cartridge by unmeshing teeth 15 on shaft from teeth 13 in cartridge wall allowing abrasive strip to be drawn from the cartridge.
