Abstract
1,157,335. Abrading. M. MARTON. 25 Nov., 1966 [21 Oct., 1966], No. 52940/66. Heading B3D. Apparatus for attaching a sheet 2 of flexible material over and around a base 1 of a disc sander and fixing the sheet by a retaining ring 17 of resilient material comprises inner and outer sleeve elements 13, 14 capable of telescopic movement, the outer element having a size to fit over the base so that, in use, having positioned the ring and the sheet on the inner element, the latter is engaged with the end face of the base with the sheet therebetween so that its edges can be folded over the side of the base and relative telescopic movement is effected between the elements to cause the outer element to transfer the ring from the inner element to a position on the base engaging the folded edge of the sheet. The base of the sander consists of a disc 4 of rubber having a side wall 6 formed with a groove 7 for the retaining ring 17 and a front face provided with a layer of sponge rubber 5a. The sheet 2 of flexible material has a backing layer 11 to each face of which discs 10 of sandpaper are glued, leaving a margin 12; alternatively abrasive may be directly secured to the backing layer. The telescopic elements are urged apart by a spring 27 to a position determined by an adjustable nut 26. A guide rod 28 is disposed in a tube 20 extending from the end wall 15 of the element 13 and in use aligns a hole 32 in the sheet 2 with a hole 33 in the base 4. In use, the sheet 2 is placed on the element 13 with the rod 28 engaging the hole 32 and placed against the end surface of the base; a further disc 40 of softer sponge rubber may be placed between the sheet and base. When the base is is pushed against the sheet, the element 13 causes the marginal portion 12 to fold over the edge of the base and further pressing causes the inner element 13 to move against the pressure of spring 27 into the outer element which pushes the ring 17 off the inner element into the groove 7 to retain the sheet on the sander. In another embodiment, the mating faces of the elements are splined to prevent the ring being caught between the faces. In a further embodiment, the inner element has an adjustable wall to accommodate sanders having bases of differing thicknesses.
