Abstract

217,460. Kempton, E. F. Aug. 1, 1923. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.- Rubber-soled footwear provided with a leather middle sole have rubber instead of leather at those parts of the middle sole, such as at the toe 2 and heel, where additional security is required. A reinforcing medium 4, such as knitted fabric or lace net, is provided between the rubber inset 2 and a rubber facing 3 to the middle sole to prevent stitches 5 securing the upper from tearing out of the middle sole. The invention is particularly applicable to footwear with soles of crepe rubber, the various parts of the sole being secured together by rubber solution. The toe section 2 may be attached with the upper facing 3 bent back, as in Fig. 6, so that when the layers are finally secured together there will be no gap between sole and middle sole at the toe.
