Abstract

A headboard for a bed has a supporting framework allowing sections of the upholstered panel to be inclined providing adjustable back support for persons adopting a semi-reclining position. Headrests are provided which are lowered automatically when the backrests are inclined and lowered to the mattress. The backrests may be parked in a vertical position creating the appearance of a standard headboard. Adjustable fixing brackets allow the frame to be attached to most beds. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION Variably inclining headboard This invention relates to a variably inclining bed headboard.

Bed headboards, in general, are available in many forms but are essentially upholstered or nonupholstered fixed pieces of decorative furniture which may be either free standing or secured to the bed.

Headboards however offer no back support for persons adopting a semi-reclining posture as may be required for reading activities etc.

According to the present invention there is provided a variably inclining headboard comprising; a panel frame or assembly thereof, which may or may not be secured to a bed, with one or more variably inclining backrest and headrest assemblies mounted integrally, a mechanism to allow manipulation of backrests from a vertically parked position to a desired inclination and return thereof, the headrest raising and lowering automatically in relation to the backrest.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying sketches in which; Figure 1 shows in perspective a rear view of a headboard which is a frame version.

Figure 2 shows one backrest assembly in a semireclining position.

Figure 3 illustrates that both backrest assemblies may be variably inclined independantly of one another.

Referring to the drawing, Figure 1, the headboard comprises; a frame 1, upholstered fixed panels 2, 3 and 4, upholstered head and backrest panels 5 and 6 respectively which are held to the frame, for example, by means of a sliding framework (not shown) and which also allows backrests 6 to pivot to a desired inclination. Retention hooks 7 are provided to hold backrests in a vertically parked position. There is also provided a means of securing frame 1 to a bed in the form of slotted adjustable brackets 8 which allow utilisation of any and severally positioned existing headboard securing holes.

In order to incline backrests 6 they are raised until retension hooks 7 clear the frame 1, turned about upper pivot points 9 to the desired inclination and the whole assembly 5, 6 lowered to the mattress by sliding the headrest vertically downward. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate.

To return the backrests 6 to a vertically parked position the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.

1. An inclinable domestic bed headboard, comprising; a panel, frame or assembly thereof, which may or may not be secured to a bed, with one or more inclinable panels mounted integrally. The panels, which may or may not be attched to the main panels, may be indvidually manipulated from a vertically parked position to an inclined position and return thereof.

2. An inclinable domestic bed headboard as claimed in 1, wherein a mechanism is provided to assist the manipulation of the inclinable panels.

3. An inclinable domestic bed headboard as claimed in 1, wherein a device is provided to allow non-attached inclinable panels to be held in a vertical parked position within the headboard.

Bed headboards, in general, are available in many forms but are essentially upholstered or nonupholstered fixed pieces of decorative furniture which may be either free standing or secured to the bed. Headboards however offer no back support for persons adopting a semi-reclining posture as may be required for reading activities etc. According to the present invention there is provided a variably inclining headboard comprising; a panel frame or assembly thereof, which may or may not be secured to a bed, with one or more variably inclining backrest and headrest assemblies mounted integrally, a mechanism to allow manipulation of backrests from a vertically parked position to a desired inclination and return thereof, the headrest raising and lowering automatically in relation to the backrest. A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying sketches in which; Figure 1 shows in perspective a rear view of a headboard which is a frame version. Figure 2 shows one backrest assembly in a semireclining position. Figure 3 illustrates that both backrest assemblies may be variably inclined independantly of one another. In order to incline backrests 6 they are raised until retension hooks 7 clear the frame 1, turned about upper pivot points 9 to the desired inclination and the whole assembly 5, 6 lowered to the mattress by sliding the headrest vertically downward. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate. To return the backrests 6 to a vertically parked position the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence. CLAIMS

1. An inclinable domestic bed headboard, comprising; a panel, frame or assembly thereof, which may or may not be secured to a bed, with one or more inclinable panels mounted integrally. The panels, which may or may not be attched to the main panels, may be indvidually manipulated from a vertically parked position to an inclined position and return thereof.

2. An inclinable domestic bed headboard as claimed in 1, wherein a mechanism is provided to assist the manipulation of the inclinable panels.

3. An inclinable domestic bed headboard as claimed in 1, wherein a device is provided to allow non-attached inclinable panels to be held in a vertical parked position within the headboard.
