Abstract
216,746. Sheppard, H. B. Aug. 17, 1923. Arresting grips or friction apparatus on permanent way.-For reducing the speed of colliery pit tubs, two convergent surfaces are located one on each side of a track rail in such a manner that one surface on being engaged by a wheel of the vehicle tends to raise the wheel whereupon the weight of the vehicle tends to bring another part of the wheel into braking engagement with the other surface. The two surfaces are provided respectively by bars 1, 12 mounted upon members 3, 4 bolted together at 8 and fixed to the base of the track rail 2 by claw parts 5, 6. The wheel runs 'upon the bar 1 and is then forced by the weight of the vehicle against the bar 12. This bar is provided with an inclined slot through which passes a pin 15 so that by exerting a longitudinal pull on the bar it is withdrawn from contact with the wheel against the action of a spring.
