Filtering.-Gases are filtered by granular or coarsely powdered material descending at a controlled rate between vertical openwork supports, two or more adjacent passages being formed by the supports, through which the gases pass in succession. The filter extends vertically across a chamber A with a gas inlet and outlet, and comprising louvre, slat, or other pervious supports B, B', forming passages for the descent of granular or powdered filtering medium such as. quartz or flint chippings or metallic fragments. The material is fed from a hopper E by a worm F to a gas-tight extension C of the passages between the supports, and is removed through an extension D by a worm G and delivered to a screen J rotated or vibrated to remove the dust,. the cleansed material being returned by an elevator M to the feed hopper. The floor of the chamber A slopes, to return any escaped material to the casing D. The outlet D is divided bv a partition D', hinged or pivoted to regulate the relative areas of the two outlet passages. The pitch of the screw G is variable so that the rate of discharge of the filtering material is kept uniform along the width of the passage. The interior slats B' may be combined' together forming W-shaped members. In a modification, the materials in the two passages may be different, and may be provided with separate inlet and outlet and separate means forregulating the rate of movement.
