Endless chain and like carriers, apparatus with. - A device for holding, handling, and displaying rolls of linoleum, carpets, cloth, paper, lead, &c. comprises a frame a at the front and back of which are superimposed on ball-bearings adjustable spindles d, d<1> carrying rollers e, e<1>. Each pair of front and back rollers e, e' is connected by an endless belt f on which rests a roll of material. In the larger forms of apparatus each spindle d may have at one end a bevel wheel g engageable by bevel wheels j on a vertical hand or poweroperated shaft h. The wheels j are axially movable on the shaft h and each may be maintained in or out of engagement with its wheel g by a spring catch. In order to raise a roll from the floor to its shelf, two bands u having end hooks u' are unwound from drums 8<2> on a shaft s and are passed under the roll and hook on to one of a number of spacing angle-irons b which support the frame a. On rotating the drums s<2> by turning the shaft h when the top wheel j is in engagement, the bands u are drawn up and raise the roll x till it reaches the level of its shelf and falls on the belts f. The roll may then be unwound for display by rotating the corresponding spindle d by the shaft h and so travelling its supporting belts f. To maintain the roll in position a spindle r<2> of a crank r<1> is inserted in the centre of the roll, a ball-bearing sleeve and a spacing collar z being preferably provided on the spindle, Fig. 8. The other spindle r of the crank is carried in a sliding block p retained in place by straps p<1> and loaded by a weight q or by springs. Alternatively, rollers may bear on the upper side of the rolls. A third roller may be provided between the rollers e, e<1> at a lower level to prevent contact between the top and bottom sides of the belt f. The frame a may be built up of a series of superimposed dismountable units. A roller may be provided at the foot of the apparatus on to which the roll material can be wound. A brake may be fitted to control unwinding of a partly unwound roll.
