SPECIFICATION Cigarette storage and delivery apparatus This invention relates to an apparatus for storing cigarettes and delivering them one by one to a user in lighted condition.
According to the invention there is provided an apparatus for storing cigarettes and delivering them one by one to a user in lighted condition, including a cigarette storage cylinder mounted for driven rotation about its axis relative to a cigarette lighting station, drive means for incrementally rotating said storage cylinder to deliver cigarettes one by one to said lighting station, means for operating cigarette lighting means at said lighting station upon delivery of a cigarette thereto, means for lifting a cigarette at said lighting station to a position for manual extraction from the apparatus, an indicator light which is automatically energized when a lit cigarette is ready for extraction, and means for carrying out all of such operations automatically upon manual operation of single control switch.
In a preferred form the invention provides such an apparatus designed as a table-top article with an elegant configuration suitable for using in the general households, offices or factories and even outdoor places. Especially it preferably provides such an apparatus with a cigarette lighting-up switch which, upon a light push, will automatically initiate the actions to deliver and light up a cigarette, whilst at the same time lighting up the indicator light as a signal to indicate the cigarette has been lighted up and is ready for extraction by the user.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a front view of the apparatus; Fig. 2 shows a vertical cross-sectional view of the apparatus; Fig. 3 shows a detailed enlarged view of a structural part of the apparatus; Fig. 4 shows a detailed enlarged view of the electric conductivity means for the circuit contact points of the apparatus; Fig. 5 shows a plan view and a side view of the cigarette storage cylinder of the apparatus; Fig. 6 shows a detailed view of the cigarette automatic outlet and light-up device of the apparatus; Fig. 7 shows the oblique view of the ash tray of the apparatus; and Fig. 8 shows a circuit diagram of the apparatus.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the apparatus mainly comprises main base, cigarette storage cylinder base 2, cigarette storage cylinder 3, ash tray 4, cigarette storage cylinder 5, and cigarette lifter 6. In the base body 100 of the main base, a suitably sized hollow chamber is provided to accommodate transfer mechanism 7 of the cigarette storage cylinder, automatic cigarette lighting-up device 8 at a cigarette lighting station, power supply control device 9, and motor 10. At upper and lower positions on the base body 100 of the main base, a cigarette lighting switch 12, a power supply switch 13 and an indicator light 14 are attached. At a suitable position on one side inside of the base body 100 ofthe main base 1, a battery chamber 103 is provided to accommodate at least two No. 3 size batteries 106, or alternatively a rectifier set, a DC/AC power changeover switch and a power supply line with a plug to plug in and connect to the household AC power supply. By means of the aforesaid DC/AC power changeover switch, it is easy to control the power supply directly from batteries 106 or from the common household AC power supply as desired.
Each of the cigarettes in cigarette storage cylinder 5 is inserted and loaded in a respective tube 51 and after each tube has been inserted and loaded with a cigarette 19, the user may slightly press and then release the cigarette-lighting-up switch 12. The power supply is thus connected to cause motor 10 to drive a bevel gear group 71 and to rotate a cam gear which, in turn, causes the cigarette storage cylinder transfer mechanism 7 to rotate through a suitable angle, and then also drives a vertically movable rod 82 of automatic cigarette-lighting-up device 8 to engage a cigarette 19 by way of its bracket 84, thus effecting an upward lift through cigarette delivery hole 32 of the movable cover 3, to cause the cigarette to protrude above movable cover 3 for manual extraction from the apparatus.
The bevel gear group 71 also simultaneously starts power supply control device 9 which energizes the electric heating coil 87 in bracket 84 so as to light the cigarette 19 protruding from cigarette outlet hole 32 of movable cover 3. At the instant of lighting the cigarette, indicator lamp 14 is also energized to indicate that cigarette 19 has been lit Then, atthe time when the lighted cigarette 19 has been picked up or is about to be picked up by a user, the aforesaid power supply device 9 also operates to cut off the power supply for the electric heating coil 87, thus stopping the heating process and also causing the rod 82 to drop down to its original position to prepare for the next sequence.
An upper cover plate 101 is provided on one upper side of main base 1. On its lower side are a movable and detachable base cover plate 104 and several feet 105 in the form of rubber plugs. A receptacle rim 102 is provided to accommodate the ash tray 4.

At a suitable position in the cover plate 30, the cigarette delivery hole 32 is provided in direct alignment with the cigarette insertion and loading tubes 53 of the cylinder body 50 of the cigarette storage cylinder. In the cigarette delivery hole 32, several cigarette stop brushes 33 or similar devices are provided. Whenever a cigarette 19 is delivered from this cigarette delivery hole 32 to a suitable height (as shown in Fig. 1) the cigarette is stopped and held up by the cigarette stop brush 33 without slipping down, to await the user picking it up for smoking.
As shown in Fig. 5, the cigarette storage cylinder 5 comprises an inner bottomed cylinder 50 and outer bottomless cylinder 51. On the under side of the bottom plate 52 of the inner cylinder, at its center, a square slot is provided to engage the cigarette storage cylinder 5 on a square rod 79 on the upper end of shaft 70 of the transfer mechanism 7 of the cigarette storage cylinder. The cylinder 5 rests on a ring of bulge points of a receptacle plate 76 for the cigarette storage cylinder. By means of the driving action of the transfer mechanism 7, an intermittent driving action is effected to deliver one cigarette at a time to the bracket 84 of the automatic cigarettelighting-up device 8.Inside the perimeter of the cylinder body 51 of the outer cylinder, a number of cigarette insertion and loading tubes 53 are arranged at equal intervals and are secured to the outer perimeter wall of the upper half section of cylinder body 50. In each cigarette insertion and loading tube 53, a cigarette 19 can be inserted and loaded, to rest on the upper base plate 22 of the cylinder body 20.
As shown in Fig. 5, the cigarette lifter 6 mainly comprises a lifting plate 60 with a diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the cylinder body 50 of the inner cylinder of the cigarette storage cylinder. At the center of this lifting plate a lifting rod 61 is provided, and on the upper end of this lifting rod a lifting knob 62 is attached. This allows reserve cigarettes to be loaded on to the lifting plate 60 around the lifting rod 61; upon lifting the knob 62 to a suitable height, all the cigarettes in the cylinder body 50 are lifted to a suitable height above the mouth of the cylinder, to facilitate inserting cigarettes in the loading tubes 52 of the cylinder body 51.
As shown in Fig. 3, the transfer mechanism 7 of the cigarette storage cylinder is mainly composed of a main shaft 70 of the transfer mechanism, bevel gear group 71, spring 72, retaining ring 73, flange gear74a, key board gear74b, key board 75, steel balls loading plate 76, motor shaft 77a, power supply control shaft 77b, steel balls 78a and 78b, and motor 10.
Main shaft 70 of the transfer mechanism is rotatably secured at the centre (as shown in Fig. 2) of the lower bottom plate 21 of the cylinder body 20 of the cigarette storage base by the loading plate 76 of the cigarette storage cylinder and key board 75.
On the upper end of main shaft 70, square rod 79 is provided to engage on cigarette storage cylinder 5; on the lower end of this main shaft, spring 72 and key board gear 74b is a gear with suitably sized ratchet teeth and on the side of this gear, a number of such ratchet teeth equivalent to the number of cigarette insertion and loading tubes of the cigarette storage cylinder 5 are provided; key board 75 is a board symmetrical to the aforesaid key board gear 74b and rotatably fixed in a corresponding position, and is provided with quantity catch pins. The force of spring 72 urges key board gear 74b and key board 75 together so that they mutually engage in close contact. On the upper side of the key board 75 and the lower side of the lower bottom plate 21 of cylinder body 20 of the cigarette storage cylinder base, circular slots are provided which receive a ring of steel balls 78b. On the upper side of the plate 21 and the loading plate 76 of the cigarette cylinder, a corresponding circular slot is also provided to receive another ring of steel balls 78a. The main shaft 70 of the transfer mechanism is rotatably secured on the plate 21 to freely make rotations in both directions.
The driving gear of bevel gear group 71 is fixed on motor shaft 77a; the driven gear is fixed on power supply control shaft 77b. Motor shaft 77a is extended to a suitable length from motor 10 installed at a suitable position on the inside of the base body 100 of the main base (as shown in Fig. 2) and is also rotatably supported at a suitable position on the lower side of cylinder body base plate 21; on the shaft is a gear 74a with a suitable number of teeth to engage the key board gear 74b.When motor 10 is used to drive gear 74a in each revolution, this drives key board 75 and the cigarette storage cylinder 56 that is on square rod 79, to rotate a catch pin in the direction as shown by the arrow to transfer a cigarette 19 from the insertion and loading tube 53 to bracket 84 of automatic cigarette lighting-up device 8, and also to engage one end of this cigarette directiy against electric heating coil 87.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 6, the automatic cigarette lighting-up device 8 is fixed on the lower side of cylinder body 20 and is mainly composed of anchor base 80, anchor frame 81, vertically moveable rod 82, bracket 84, spring 85 and electric heating coil 87.
In the center of anchor base 80, an orienting and positioning keywaythrough hole is provided in order to rotatably receive the base body of rod 82, and the base 80 is also fixed on an anchor frame 81 in order to be mounted at a suitable position on the lower side of cylinder body 20.
Rod 82 is formed with a key 83, and on its upper end is the electric heating coil 87 and bracket 84 formed with a smoke exhaust window 88. At the lower end of the rod, an anchor pin 86 or a positioning ring is secured, and spring 85 engages the anchor pin or positioning ring to cause the spring force to automatically urge the rod downward. Bracket 84 is provided with a lower rim on at least one side in order to keep the cigarette inside the bracket. The window 88 is provided to promote air convection and also to let smoke produced by the lighted cigarette body to flow through this window, and then out of cylinder body 20 via air vent hole 23 on cylinder base 2 of the cigarette storage cylinder.Between one side of bracket 84 and anchor base 80, two-line twisted (or two-core) spring-type retractible heat-resistant electric heating lines 16b and 18a are provided which are connected by lines 87 to the contact point of the negative pole of the battery loading chamber 103 and to contact point 99b of the C-shaped ring of distributor 92. When rod 82 moves up and down, the power supply functions of these two power supply lines to the electric heating lines are never affected.
As shown in Figs.1,3 and 4, power supply control device 9 is mainly composed of smoke outlet cam 90, power input plate 91, power distributor 92, power output plate 93, spring 94 and anchor pin 95 or an anchor retaining ring, which are arranged in sequence on the same axis as the power supply control shaft 77b between the driven gear of bevel gear group 71 and a retaining ring 97. Power supply control shaft 77b is rotatably mounted on and supported by the suspension base 96 which is fixed at a suitable position in the lower side of cylinder base 2 of the cigarette storage cylinder, and fixed on the lower side of anchor base 80 or to anchor plate 89 directly extended downward from this anchor base 80.When motor 10 drives bevel gears7l,the driven bevel type gear drives shaft 77b to rotate it to drive smoke outlet cam 90 and power distributor 92 to rotate accordingly. The smoke outlet cam 90 is a two-step single bulge cam which engages the lower end of rod 82 to drive the rod up and down. On the side of the power supply plate 91 facing the power distributor, connection point 98 is provided and is connected by power line 1 7c to power supply switch 13, which is fixed at a suitable position on the inside of main base body 100. The power distributor 92 (a disc-like body) faces the power supply plate 91, and is provided with contact point ring 99a of the corresponding contact point 98. On its side facing power supply input plate 93, C-shaped ring contact member 99b and arc contact member 99c are provided respectively. In the gap of the C-shaped ring contact point and at the front end of the arc contact point are radially aligned positioning pits 99d of suitable depth and size. In the disc body 92 a conduction line is provided and serially connects the contact point ring 99a on one side and the two contact members 99b and 99c on the other side.
Power outlet plate 93 is rotatably and slidably mounted in the power supply control shaft 77b, and the spring force of spring 94 urges the plate to closely contact distributor 92. At two positions opposite the two contact points 99b and 99c on the power outlet plate, facing the distributor side, two contact points are provided and are connected with indicator lamp 14 and electric heating line 87 by power lines 18a and 18b, in order to make timely power supply available to the electric heating line to indicator lamp 14 to indicate that a cigarette has been lit. In addition to keeping power supply plate 93 in close contact with power distributor 92 by its spring force, spring 94 also causes distributor 92 to closely contact power input plate 91, to maintain a good electric conductivity.
As shown in Fig. 7, ash tray 4 is a moulded tray 40 with several cigarette receiving slots 41. It is made of bakelite, stainless steel, or similar material.
The elements of the apparatus are generally made of fire-proof insulation piastics or bakelite or other similar material. Elements close to the electric heating line must be specifically made of fire-proof and heat-resistant materials. The contact point parts are made of silver or material with excellent electric conductivity, such as copper phosphide plate; as for the power line parts, in addition to the need of wires with excellent electric conductivity, heat-resistant wires must be used in places closes to the electric heating lines.
Fig. 8 is a circuit diagram of the apparatus. Upon slightly pressing lighting-up switch 12, this connects the batteries 106 with motor 10, which drives bevel gears 71 to rotate in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. Thus motor shaft 77a drive gear 74a which, having only a few teeth, although driven through one revolution, merely drives key board gear 74b through an angular increment so as to drive key board 75 and cigarette storage cylinder 5 far enough to automatically deliver a cigarette 19 in the tube 53 of cigarette storage cylinder 5 to bracket 84 of lighting-up device 8, ready for the lighting-up action. At the same time, although switch 12 is now released and no power supply is furnished by this switch to motor 10, the driven gear of the bevel gear group 71 has driven power control shaft 77b together with cigarette outlet cam 90 and power distributor 92 to rotate and the lower contact point of power output plate 93, previously retained on the two positioning pits 99d, to conduct the power of batteries 106 to motor 10, to make the motor operate continuously; at the same time, electric heating wire 87 is energized. When power distribution 92 and cigarette outlet cam 90 and the motor have made nearly one whole revolution, the cigarette is lit up.Cigarette outlet cam 90 now lifts rod 82 upward approximately to the position shown in Fig. 4, and contact point 99c on the inside of power distributor 92 is contacted by the contact point on the upper side of power outlet plate 93, thus supplying current to indicator lamp 14 as an indication that cigarette 19 has been lit. Meanwhile, the upward movement of rod 82 causes the lighted cigarette 10 to protrude above the top of movable cover 3 at a suitable height, as shown in Fig. 1, where the cigarette is stopped by cigarette stop brush 33 in outlet hole 32 of the cover body. Then, when the power distributor 92 has rotated to its two positioning pits 99d and has also been restored to the position as indicated by the solid lines in Fig. 4, the two contact points on power output plate 93 simultaneously fall into these two positioning pits 99d and no longer contact point 99b or 99c, thus cutting off the power supply to the motor, the electric heating line and the indicator lamp. The automatic cigarette delivery and lighting-up action is thereby completed. If it is desired to deliver and light another cigarette, it is only necessary to lightly press the switch 12 again and then release it; every time this is done the cycle repeats, and the whole cycle takes no more thaw about 10 seconds. Thus the apparatus is speedy, simple and convenient in operation.
