Abstract

A carrier for cups or cup-shaped articles is made from a flat blank and comprises a base 1 having apertures for receiving the cups c, spaced side walls 3 and/or a top wall (4) spaced from the base, and a handle 5 extending from the top wall 4 or from at least one side of the side-walls. The carrier is particularly useful for carring cups containing hot beverages, which are placed in the apertures in the base of a flat blank, whereupon the blank is folded to errect the carrier about the cups. In a modification (Fig 3), a handle portion on one top wall-forming panel passes through a slit at the junction of the other top wall-forming panel and an extension flap thereof to releasably- return the carrier in erect form. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Carriers for cups and the like The invention relates to carriers for cups, cartons or beakers, especially plastic cups of the type used in beverage vending machines and in take-away shops, and to flat cut-out blanks for producing such carriers.
Cups of the type primarily intended to be carried are generally frusto-conical in shape, the rim being of greater diameter than the base, and may or may not have a lip to the rim. Such cups are often of thin-walled plastics, expanded polystyrene or paper, with or without a lid and are used in many trades for example for serving drinks or packaging drinks and dairy produce.
It is often the case that a purchase of, say, two or three cups of hot coffee or tea may have difficulty in carrying those cups, without spillage or scalding of the fingers, from the source of supply, e.g. a vending machine, to their destination. It is the object of the invention to provide a carrier of simple, cheap and disposable design for use in such circumstances.
According to the present invention we provide a carrier for cups or cup-shaped articles which is made from a flat blank and comprises a base having apertures for receiving the cups, spaced side walls and/or a top wall spaced from the base, and a handle extending from said top wall or from at least one of said side walls.
The invention also provides a flat blank of foldable material, e.g. card, said blank comprising a base-forming portion having cup-receiving apertures, side wall-forming portions and/or topwallforming portions, at least one of said top or side wall-forming portions having a handle-forming portion attached thereto.
The base may have any suitable number of cupreceiving apertures.Suitably there will be at least two, and the apertures may be in one or more rows. For example, there may be one row of three apertures, or two rows of two apertures.
The carriers of the invention will preferably be provided in flat blank form, so that for example a stack of such blanks may be placed close to a beverage vending machine or on the counter of a caf%5e, and suitably the fold lines between the various wall portions of the blank will have been made by a folding, scoring or cutting machine. It will then be a simple matter to place a single blank on a table, or counter, or shelf, and place the filled cups in the apertures. The blank may then be lifted up and folded into shape, the walls of the apertures thus riding up the walls of the cups until the diameters of the cups match the diameters of the apertures, when the cups will also be lifted.
Preferably a handle-forming portion is attached to each top wall-forming portion, so that effectively the handle is formed in two halves, means preferably being provided for fastening the two halves together, temporarily or permanently, once the carrier has been erected from the blank. Thus, the two halves of the handle may be stuck or permanently fastened together, in which case the carrier would be in the nature of a package. The handles or top walls may be provided with temporary fastening means to prevent the carrier from collapsing when the cups are rested on a surface. For example, only one of the top wall-forming portions may have a handle-forming portion attached thereto which may, on erection, pass through a slit formed between the other top-wall forming portion and an extension flap attached hereto.
The cups may be supported in the aperture by means of their rims or merely by virtue of their conical profile.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings in which: Figure 1 is a carrier according to the invention, made of card and holding three cups; Figure 2 is a blank for making the carrier of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a blank for making an alternative carrier.
Referring to the drawings, a carrier is made of a cardboard blank and has a base wall (1) having apertures (2), side walls (3), a top wall made from wall portions (4), and a handle (5). The various panels are connected by fold lines (6).
In the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2 the handle is made up to two halves (5a), (5b) each of which is integral with a top wall-forming portion (4); in the embodiment of Figure 3, the handle comprises a single handle portion (5c).
In use, the blank is laid flat and cups (c) are placed in the apertures (2).
The blank is then folded along the fold lines (6).
The two halves of the handle (Figures 1 and 2) are placed together and the carrier is lifted with the cups.
With the embodiment of Figure 3, erection of the carrier is completed by passing handle portion (5c) through a slot (7) formed in fold line (6a).
1. A carrier for cups or cup-shaped articles, said carrier being made from a flat blank and comprising a base having apertures for receiving the cups, spaced side walls and/or a top wall spaced from the base, and a handle extending from said top wall or from at least one of said side walls.
2. A carrier as claimed in claim 1, substantially as described with reference to Figure 1 of the drawings.
3. A flat blank of foldable material, comprising a base-forming portion having cup-receiving apertures, side wall-forming portions and/or top wallforming portions, at least one of said top or side wall-forming portions having a handle-forming portion attached thereto.
4. A blank as claimed in claim 3, wherein a handle-forming portion is attached to each top wall-forming portion.
5. A blank as claimed in claim 4 wherein the handle-forming portions or the top wall-forming portions are provided with temporary fastening means.
