Abstract

A joint for connecting piping to a threaded attachment forming e.g. an appliance outlet comprises an annular sealing body 9 which can be locked by means of a ring nut 3; the sealing body 9 has an external portion 14 made of elastomeric material and an internal metal core 10 closely joined together; the external portion extends at one end 16 beyond a flared end 12 of the inner core and exhibits tapered surfaces 6 and 13. At the opposite end 11 the inner core exhibits an internal diameter smaller than that of the pipe 1 and the external portion exhibits in that zone a thicker section 15, capable of resting inside the end edge 8 of the threaded attachment 2. Annular protuberances may assist the seal between body 9 and pipe 1. Sealing is effected by tightening ring nut 3 causing radial deformation of portion 16 against a pipe 1 and axial compression of portion 15 against edge 8 of attachment 2; the integral metal core enables greater speed of installation whilst preventing rotation of portion 16 during tightening. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Connecting joint for connecting pipe to a threaded attachment The connection of plain piping to threaded attachment parts on pipes and apparatus such as hydraulic, pneumatic and similar appliances can be effected with many types of connections, which ensure that the joint is leaktight and mechanically hold in position the end of the pipe connected to the said threaded attachment.
A convenient method for achieving such a connection is described in Italian Industrial Utility Model Application No. 21325 of 28th March, 1980.
However, this connection requires the presence of several sealing components and clamping parts joined together; it also involves complex installation and exhibits several sealing surfaces.
It is therefore the aim of the present invention to provide an improved connection, which is rapid to install, provides an effective seal and is of moderate cost compared with those joints that are known at present.
According to the invention, this result is obtained by a monobloc joint for the leaktight connection of plain piping to threaded attachments for hydraulic appliances, pipes and the like, and comprises an annular sealing body, which can be locked by means of a ring nut threaded at one end and screwed on the said attachment, radially against the external surface of the pipe and axially against the end edge of the attachment; the sealing body has an external portion made of elastomeric maaerial and an internal metal core closely joined together; the external portion extends at one end beyond the end of the inner core and exhibits a tapered surface converging towards the said end, externally to the said pipe; at the opposite end the inner core exhibits an internal diameter smaller than that of the pipe and the said external portion exhibits in that zone a thicker section, capable of resting inside the said end edge of the threaded attachment; the inner core exhibits, at its top end before the end of the external portion, a flaring out with the tapered end surface facing that of the external portion.
The ring nut may have, at its non-threaded end, an annular portion with a tapered inner surface capable of coupling with the tapered end surface of the external portion of the sealing body.
The annular portion, with a tapered surface, of the ring nut may have, in its smaller diameter zone, an outlet throat capable of allowing the deformation of the sealing body; so that it can be installed, in relation to the diameter of the thread of the said attachment and to the external diameter of the sealing body. This annular portion can be connected to the remainder of the ring nut by means of a screw thread, which is of counter-clockwise design in order to prevent slackening during the tightening of the connection.
The external portion of the sealing body may have, on the part extending beyond the end of the inner metal core, annular protuberances on its internal surface for providing a seal against the surface of the pipe.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows one embodiment of a joint according to the invention in longitudinal section.
As shown in the drawing, a joint, according to the invention, enables the end of a pipe 1 to be connected to threaded attachment 2 such as an outlet or an inlet of an appliance, pipe or the like.
The joint consists of a ring nut 3, which can be screwed at one end to the threaded attachment 2 and tightened with the aid of a portion 4 having flat faces. At the opposite end the nut 3 has a ring 5 with a tapered surface 6, whose smaller diameter is located towards the external part of the joint. The ring 5 is connected to the end of ring nut 3 by means of a left-hand screw thread 7, as opposed to the thread of attachment 2.
A sealing body 9 (partly sectioned in the drawing) is inserted, between the tapered surface 6 of the ring 5 and the tapered surface 8 of the attachment 2. The pipe 1 is inserted in the sealing body 9.
The sealing body 9 consists of an inner metal core 10, which has a narrow part 11 at the end facing the attachment 2 whose diameter is smaller than that of pipe 1, and a flared portion 12 at the opposite end. This portion 12 has a tapered surface 13, which has a slope opposite that of surface 6.
Integral with the core 10, the body 9 has an external portion 14, made of elastomeric material, which has a thicker zone 15 in contact with the tapered surface 8 of the attachment 2 and an end part 16 between the surfaces 6 and 13.
On the inner wall 17 of this end part 16 there are several annular protuberances 18.
which assist the seal between the body 9 and the pipe 1.
This seal is effected by tightening the ring nut 3 on the threaded attachment 2, axially compressing the body 9, so as to tighten the zone 15 against the surface 8, thereby obtain ing a seal between the body 9 and the attachment 2, also causing, as a result of the action of the surfaces 6 and 13 on the part 16 during this tightening process, a deformation of the part 16 radially, thus tightly clamping it against the external surface of pipe 1 and therefore obtaining a seal between the pipe 1 and the body 9.
By making the body 9 in a single piece, with the external portion 14 made of elastom eric material integral with the inner metal core 10 (obtained, for example, when portion 14 is moulded), greater speed of installation is achieved and in addition the end part 16 is stopped from rotating, during the tightening phase, by being clamped against the wall of the pipe 1, thereby avoiding damage to the surface 17 and to the projections 18, which would be detrimental to the seal.
The ring 5 has a suitable positioned outlet throat or portion 19, which allows an even deformation of the end part 16 during tightening of the ring nut 3.
To enable it to be fitted, the ring 5 is separate from the body of the ring nut 3.
Should the threaded attachment have a greater diameter than the external diameter of the sealing body 9, the ring nut 3 and the ring 5 can be made in a single piece.
