A printed circuit board (2) comprises a main portion (4) and a break-out portion (6) which is adapted to be broken away from the main portion (4), the main portion and the break-out portion each having at least one component (8, 10). The break-out portion is electrically connected to the main portion by flexible wiring (16) which is provided on the side of the printed circuit board that has the components, and the components and the flexible wiring are provided with flow soldered electrical connections on the side of the printed circuit board remote from the components. The break-out portion is breakable away from the main portion to enable the break-out portion to be mounted separately from the main portion whilst still being in electrical contact with the main portion through the flexible wiring (16). All the electrical connections are made on the side of the printed circuit board remote from the components and are formable in one flow soldering operation. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A printed circuit board.
This invention relates to a printed ciruit board.
As is well known, printed circuit boards are provided with a plurality of components which are connected together, for example by flow soldering, on the side of the printed circuit board remote from the components. When a printed circuit board is to be connected to a separately positioned component such forexam- ple as a switch, a socket or a lamp, considerable assemblytime is required to wire the separately positioned component to the printed circuit board.
This wiring is also often difficultto do because of restricted space in which the printed circuit board and/orthe separately positioned component are mounted.
It is an aim ofthe present invention to obviate or reduce this problem.
Accordingly, this invention provides a printed circuit board having a main portion and a break-out portion which is adapted to be broken away from the main portion, the main portion and the break-out portion and the break-out portion each having at least one component, the break-out portion being electrically connected to the main portion by flexible wiring which is provided on the side of the printed circuit board that has the components, and the components and the flexible wiring being provided with flow soldered electrical connections on the side of the printed circuit board remote from the components, wherebythe break-out portion is breakable away from the main portion to enable the break-out portion to be mounted separatelyfrom the main portion whilst still being in electrical contact with the main portion and whereby all the electrical connections to be made on the side ofthe printed circuit board remote from the components are formable in one flow soldering operation.
The flow soldering operation can very simply be done over a bath of molten solder in a known manner.
The break-out portion can then be broken away and located wherever desired. The length of the flexible wiring will obviously be such as to allowthe break-out portion to be located at the desired distance away from the main portion ofthe printed circuit board.
Usually, the break-out portion will be located at one edge of the printed circuit board before it is broken away. However, generally, the break-out portion can be located wherever desired on the printed circuit board.
The break-out portion may be defined by a pair of parallel spaced apart slots and a weakened line which extends between the slots. The slots may be machine cut into the printed circuit board.
Preferably, the weakened line is provided by a score line on either side of the printed circuit board.
Usually, the flexible wiring will beflexibleflat ribbon wiring but other types of wiring, for example, individual wiring may be employed if desired.
The main portion of the printed circuit board may be provided with any desired number of components forming any desired electrical circuit.
The printed circuit board may be a rigid printed circuit board. Alternatively, the printed circuit board may be a semi-rigid or a flexible printed circuit board.
A flexible printed circuit board may advantageously be employed where the British Telecommunications Type 1000 lever switch is required to be located on a front panel of a piece of apparatus. The flexible printed circuit board can itself be bonded or otherwise connected to a main printed circuit board.
The flexible printed circuit board may be made of a polyester material, a glass-epoxy material, a fluorinated ethylene-propylenefilm material, or a combination of a polyimidefilm material with a high temperature thermosetting resin adhesive material. The combination ofthe polyimidefilm material and the high temperature thermosetting resin adhesive gives a flame retardentflexible system, and one such system is sold underthetrade mark of Kapton -thermoset.
Usually, the break-out portion will be provided with a single component such for example as a switch, a socket, a lamp or any other desired device. However, the break-out portion can also be provided with a plurality of components, for example where the break-out portion in effect forms another printed circuit.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view ofthe printed circuit board.
Figure 2 is a side view of the printed circuit board shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a side view like that of Figure 2 but shows the break-out portion in a broken away position.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a printed circuit board 2 having a main portion 4 and a break-out portion 6. The main portion 4 is provided with a plurality of components indicated somewhat schematically as electronic components 8. The break-out portion 6 is provided with a single component 10 in the form of a switch. The switch has an ON/OFF button 11.
The break-out portion 6 is adapted to be broken awayfrom the main portion 4 by a pair of slots 12 which are machine cut into the printed circuit board 2.
A line of weakness 14 secures the break-out portion 6 to the main portion 4and is formed bya pair of score lines provided on either side ofthe printed circuit board 2. The break-out portion 6 can thus be broken away from the main portion 4 about the line of weakness 14.
The break-out portion 6 is electrically connected to the main portion 4 byflexible wiring in the form of a flexible flat ribbon strip 16. As can be seen from the drawings, theflat ribbon strip 16 is provided on the side ofthe printed circuit board that has the components 8, 10. The components 8, 10 and the flexible wiring 16 are provided with flow soldered electrical connections on the side of the printed circuit board 2 remote from the components 8,10.
Figure 2 shows terminals 18 of the components 8, terminals 20 of the component 10, and wire ends 22 of the flat ribbon strip 16. The terminals 18,20 and the wire ends 22 all extend in the same direction as shown. The side of the printed circuit board 2 remote from the components 8,loins the track side 24 of the printed circuit board 2. The track side 24 is shown in Figure 2 as passing over a molten solder wave 26 emanating from slot 28. It will be apparentfrom Figure 2 that in one sing le flow soldering operation, all the necessary electrical connections between the terminals 18,20 and the wire ends 22 can be made. Figure3 shows the terminals 18,20 and the wire ends 22 after theflowsoldering operation.
In use of the printed circuit board 2, the break-out portion 6 is breakable awayfrom the main portion 4, for example as illustrated in Figure 3. The break-out portion 6 is then mountable separatelyfrom the main portion 4, for example in any desired plane relative to the main portion 4 on a face plate (not shown) of a radio (not shown). The break-out portion 6 is however still in electrical contact with the main portion through the flat ribbon strip 16. Thus, afterthe mounting ofthe break-out portion 6 in the desired position, it is not then necessary as has previously been the case for the component 10 to be separatelywired as necessary to the components 8. Thus much assembly wiring time is saved and an often difficult and frustrating separate wiring step is avoided.
It isto be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above has been given byway of example only and that modifications may be affected.
Thus, for example, the flat ribbon strip 16 could be replaced by individual wires. Also, the break-out portion 6 could be provided with a plurality of electronic components instead ofjustthe one component 10 so that the break-out portion 6 would then be like a separate printed circuit board. With four break-out portions 6 positioned one on each side of the main portion 4, it will be apparent that if the break-out portions 6 are broken upwardlythrough 90% then a box type construction can quickly and easily be formed. The printed circuit board 2 is a rigid printed circuit board but it could be a flexible printed circuit board or a semi-rigid composite layer printed circuit board.
