In a floor drain, comprising a mounting flange (2), a drain trough (29) joined to the mounting flange and provided with a water seal (28), an inlet part included in the mounting flange, an outlet pipe (33) joined to the drain trough and a clamping ring (22) arranged inside the mounting flange, the mounting flange in its peripheral part is formed with increased material thickness for obtaining a grinding margin and several fastening lugs (5, 14) project outside the outer boundary surface (16) of the mounting flange (2), said fastening lugs being oriented in the same plane as the lower boundary surface (3) of the flange. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Floor drain The present invention relates to a floor drain constructed so as to permit adjusting within a wide range of measure deviations the uppermost portion of the drain to the adjacent outside of the surrounding floor material and affording a large contact surface without any great breaks to a mat glued on the floor material and the top side and inner side of the mounting flange of the drain. The construction also permits adjustment of the drain and fastening it to a supporting means included in the floor before the floor material is fitted around the floor drain.
The floor drains mainly used today are mounted in suspended condition in the floor.
In the floor bedding a hole has been made for the floor drain and in certain cases a depression has been chiseled out around the hole for the mounting flange of the drain. Mostly the flange is provided with a number of screw holes for fastening the floor drain into the floor bedding. However, the screw joints will be situated too close to the hole border so that they cannot be considered safe and the chiseling will mostly become uneven and therefore the floor drain will not lie steady.
There are machines for milling out the depression around the holes but they are so expensive that they are rarely used. Moreover, the suspension flange is so thin that only a very limited grinding margin is left for adaptation of the flange to the floor surface. In other words, the mounting flange is a hindrance to the water run-down into the floor drain. It has also been found that the floor drain under unfavourable conditions may climb up and out of the floor hole.
Another problem entailed with existing floor drains is that, if the floor is to be covered with a mat, then the mat must be turned down 90 into the floor drain. This results in a roll in the mat preventing run-down in the floor drain. The size of the roll is dependent upon the stiffness of the mat. The heavy fold-down also involves that the mat will be liable to come loose from the bedding whereby moisture will creep in under the mat, which is facilitated if the mat has pressed the clamping ring out of position.
Thus, there are great problems entailed with the floor drains used today and with the mounting quality which may be required in connection with building operations as well as heating, water and sanitation operations.
From statistics produced by the Insurance Company's Building Repairs Committee it is apparent that the construction as well as the mounting of a conventional floor drain has led to a very large number of moisture and water damages.
The novelty of the invention is that the mounting flange in its peripheral portion is formed with increased material thickness to obtain a grinding margin and that several fastening lugs project outside the outer boundary surface of the mounting flange, which lugs are oriented in the same plane as the lower boundary surface of the flange.
The above disadvantages are overcome by means of the present invention. The floor drain is firmly secured to e.g. a joist and not in the floor bedding. The height of the mounting flange is adjusted to the adjacent top side of the floor bedding. The upper side of the flange is arched so that a smooth transition is obtained from the floor bedding and a curve less than 45 will be obtained near the clamping ring, which means that the mat can be glued firmly on to the drain. A clamping ring, which is firmly snapped in the floor drain, will anchor the mat tightly in the drain.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a top view showing the floor drain fixed to a supporting means; Fig. 2 shows the drain in a section A-A in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a broken-out part of the drain in mounted condition and in a section B-B in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a top view of a modification of the floor drain fixed to a supporting means, and Fig. 5 shows the modification in a section C-C in Fig. 4 without any supporting means.
The floor drain 1 consists preferably of a drain trough 29 formed of a plastic material and provided with an integrated mounting flange 2. The mounting flange, which should be considerably wider than that of corresponding conventional drains, is provided with an arched upper side 1 7 which, at the peripheral and circular boundary surface 1 6 of the flange, is generally parallel with the underside 3 of the flange. At the inner, circular boundary surface 21 the mounting flange 2 makes an angle of 2135 with said surface 21.In addition to the fact that the upper side of the flange will thus provide a large contact surface with smooth transitions to permit safer glueing of e.g. a wet-room mat 20, the width ( > 50 mm) of the flange makes the drain acceptable for membrane insulation in casting on wooden floor structures. As appears from Fig. 2, right-hand part, the mounting flange may, for foundry-technical reasons, be provided with a number of void segments 1 9 which are open towards the flange periphery 16. In this case the wall thickness at the upper side 1 7 is considerably larger (about 3 times) than the wall thickness at the underside 3 of the flange. Alternatively, the larger wall thickness may be restricted to the highest portion of the flange, i.e. at the peripheral boundary surface 1 6 of the flange; see Fig. 5.
Fastening lugs 5, 14 project from the un derside 3 of the flange and these consist of e.g. metal tongues which are attached by means of screws 7 or the like in the underside 3 of the mounting flange or cast into the flange and directed generally radially outwardly from the flange. In the end of the lugs 5, 14 facing away from the flange there are holes for nail or screw joints 8, 1 3 for fastening of the drain to e.g. a framework 4, 12.
It appears from Fig. 3 that the inner boundary surface 21 of the mounting flange may be provided with annular beads 26. Arranged at right angles to the surface 21 is a clamping ring shelf 25 having two snapping means 24 situated substantially diametrically opposite to each other. A clamping ring 22 is locked to the clamping ring shelf 25 with cooperating snapping means 23 at the underside of the clamping ring. In addition to clamping the wet-room mat 20 against the mounting flange 2 the clamping ring serves as a support for a grating 27.
Arranged inside and coaxially with the clamping ring shelf 25 is a water seal shelf 30 in which there is fastened an angled forward water-seal tongue 31 with a cleaning plug 32. A pipe connection 33 is attached through a hole in the drain trough 29 and connected to a rear water-seal tongue 34 which is disposed in parallel with the forward water-seal tongue 31 and attached to the bottom part 10 of the drain trough 29. In that portion of the pipe connection 33 which is situated in the drain trough the uppermost part of the pipe is cut off so as to provide an opening 36. This opening is the overflow outlet of the floor drain. To reduce the amount of water that is difficult to exchange in the floor drain the space between the rear water-seal tongue 34, the pipe connection 33 and the bottom 10 of the trough may be filled with some water-resistant mass 35, such as silicone.
Figs. 4 and 5 show an alternative embodiment of the floor drain. In this embodiment the mounting flange 2, the fastening lugs 5, 14, the drain trough 29, the rear water-seal tongue 34 and the pipe connection 33 are cast in one piece. As distinguished from the earlier presented embodiment the mounting flange 2 is provided with a number of void segments 1 9 which are open towards the underside 3 of the flange. Moreover, the fastening lugs are interconnected on either side of the pipe connection 33 by means of a perpendicular supporting flange 36 projecting from the circular boundary surface 1 6 of the mounting flange 2. The supporting flange 36 provides together with the supplementary joist part 12' a very stable insertion of the drain.
The construction of the floor drain, especially the lugs, makes it possible for the drain to be permanently supported by a telescopically adjustable support 9 which is arranged on the bottom plate 10, without any risk of the drain creeping up through the floor and makes it difficult to mount the drain wrongly.
It will also be unnecessary to divide the floor material at the drain, as is required for prior art drains.
When the floor drain 1 is to be mounted the underside 3 of the mounting flange 2 is placed on a floor joist 4 so that a pair of fastening lugs 5 projecting from the underside 3 of the flange will rest in corresponding depressions 6 in the joist 4. After that the floor drain is fastened to the joist by means of nail or screw joints 8 through holes in the fastening lugs.
A telescopic support 9 (for instance of the type shown in Swedish Patent Application 8401906-6) between the bottom part 10 of the floor drain and the floor plate 11 makes it possible to orient the drain. A supplementary joist part 1 2 of adjusted height may be fitted under the mounting flange 2 generally parallel with the joist 4. The floor drain is also fastened to the joist part 1 2 by means of nail or screw joints 1 3 through holes in the lugs 14.
The flooring, e.g. boards or tiles 15, are laid on the floor joists 4, and perferably a tile having a circular recess corresponding to the periphery 1 6 of the mounting flange and a thickness at the recess substantially corresponding to the height of the flange, is passed on the floor drain.
Adjustment of the floor drain to the adjacent tile is effected in that, at the points where the mounting flange does not reach up to the upper boundary surface of the tile, a filler is applied on the arched top side 1 7 of the flange, up to the level of or somewhat above said surface. Thereupon the flange is ground and so is also, if required, the adjacent portion of the tile, so that excess portions 1 8 will be removed and a smooth transition is obtained between the tile and the floor drain.
Finally a wet-room mat 20 is glued on to the flooring and on the arched top side 1 7 and inside 21 of the mounting flange 2. The smooth transition obtained between the tile and the flange causes that there will be no roll or break in the mat. The arched top side 1 7 also causes that the mat need be broken less than 45e when it is to be glued on to the inside 21 of the flange. Thereupon a clamping ring 22 is carried down into the floor drain.
The clamping ring is provided with two diametrically opposite snapping means 23 at the underside of the clamping ring; see Fig. 3.
These are oriented over interacting snapping means 24 on the clamping ring shelf 25 in the floor drain. When the clamping ring is pressed down into the drain the mat is pressed against the inside 21 of the mounting flange and annular beads 26 on the inside, whereby a seal is obtained against water leakage. As the clamping ring 22 is further pressed down the snapping means 23, 24 will be brought into engagement with one another whereby the clamping ring is locked to the clamping ring shelf 25 and the mat 20 will be safely anchored in the floor drain.
Finally a grating 27 is placed on the upper side of the clamping ring and above the water seal 28.
Joining of the floor drain to a cast concrete floor may be effected by fastening the floor drain resting on a supporting means which is arranged on the floor structure or the bottom plate. The supporting means may consist of a slit and vertically adjusted cylindrical reinforcement with a sand bed included therein.
Rough casting of the floor is carried out to a level approximately flush with the underside of the mounting flange. During the subsequent fine casting the mounting flange and the adjoining floor surface are brought approximately on level with one another. Thereupon the mounting flange is adjusted to the adjoining floor by filling and grinding in the manner described above. Finally a mat may be glued or a surface coating may be applied on the floor and the mounting flange.

Claims (6)

1. Floor drain, including a mounting flange (2), a drain trough (29) joined to the mounting flange and provided with a water seal (28), an inlet part included in the mounting flange, an outlet pipe (33) connected to the drain trough and a clamping ring (22) arranged inside the mounting flange, characterized in that the peripheral part of the mounting flange, the upper boundary surface of which preferably slopes downwardly and inwardly from its peripheral part, has an increased material thickness permitting adjustment of the level by grinding or the like, and by several fastening lugs (5, 14) projecting outside the outer boundary surface (16) of the mounting flange (2) and oriented in the same plane as the lower boundary surface (3) of the flange.

Floor drain as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the upper boundary surface (17) of the mounting flange (2) is arched and that said surface, at the outer boundary surface (16) of the mounting flange, is generally parallel with the lower boundary surface (3) of the flange, and that the upper boundary surface (17), at the inner boundary surface (21) of the mounting flange, makes an angle r135" therewith.
3. Floor drain as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the fastening lugs (5, 14) are integrated with the mounting flange (2) and that at least two fastening lugs are interconnected with a supporting flange (36) projecting from the outer boundary surface (16) of the mounting flange.
4. Floor drain as claimed in any of claims 1-3, characterized by a pair of substantially diametrically opposite snapping means (23) at the underside of the clamping ring (22) and snapping means (24) coacting therewith, arranged in the drain trough (29).
5. Floor drain as claimed in any of claims 1-4, characterized in that the inner boundary surface (21) of the mounting flange is formed with annular beads (26).
6. A floor drain substantially as described herein with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
