Abstract

An electric light fitting includes a rim (36) for fitting into an aperture in a wall or ceiling (4). A pair of parallel upstanding side members (5 and 6) are arranged to extend from the rim (36). A housing supports a cable terminal assembly (12) and a lamp holder (8). The housing interconnects the bent over free end portions of the side members (5 and 6). Each side member (5 and 6) preferably carries a respective dog-shaped leaf spring (33) which acts to clamp the fitting into the ceiling (4). Each spring (33) is pivotally secured to its side member (5 and 6) and a locating dowel (34) enables the spring (33) to be held in an operating position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electric light fitting This invention relates to an electric light fitting of the kind (hereinafter referred to as "a light fitting of the kind specified") comprising a yoke adapted to be inserted in an aperture in a ceiling or wall, the yoke comprising a first side portion, a second side portion and a connecting portion, the latter interconnecting one end of each of said side portions and being adapted for the attachment thereto of a lamp holder.
The present invention aims at providing a light fitting of the kind specified which has, as compared with known light fittings of this kind, the advantages of greater versatility and more rational assembly.
These advantages are inherent in an electric light fitting of the kind specified wherein, in accordance with the present invention, at least part of said connecting portion is defined by at least part of a cable terminal assembly for said lamp holder.
One form of electric light fitting embodying the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying perspective view of the light fitting installed in a ceiling.
Referring to the drawing, the light fitting 1 comprises a yoke 2 adapted to be inserted in an aperture 3 in a ceiling 4. The yoke 2 comprises a first side portion 5, a second side portion 6 and a connecting portion 7. The connecting portion 7 interconnects one end of each of said side portions 5, 6 and is adapted for the attachment thereto, or suspension therefrom, of a lamp holder 8.
Part of the connecting portion 7 is defined by a box 9 which forms part of a cable terminal assembly for the lamp holder 8.
The box 9 is secured to the connecting portion 7 by rivets 10 and 11. It houses a terminal block 12, which is electrically connected to the lamp holder 8 by wires (not shown), the lamp holder 8 being secured to the box 9 by screws 1 4 and associated nuts, so as to be suspended from the box 9.
The terminal block 1 2 is enclosed in the box 9 by a lid 16. The lid 16 is held in position on, and secured to, the box 9 by means of a lug 1 7 on the lid 1 6 which fits into a slot 18 in one end wall of the box 9, and two self-tapping screws 1 9 which pass through clearance holes 20 at the other end of the lid 16 and are screwed into lugs 21 in the box 9.
A ledge 22 depending from the underside of the lid 1 6 co-operates with a ledge 23 at the end of the box 9 remote from the slot 1 8 to define a cable clamp.
The underside of the box 9 has at each of its ends a rectangular recess 24, 25. A first end region 26 of the connecting portion 7 fits into the recess 24; similarly a second end region 27 of the connecting portion 7 fits into the recess 25. In this way the box 9 is correctly aligned with the remainder of the connecting portion 7 to complete and form part of the yoke 2 to provide a rigid yoke structure.
A pinch screw earthing terminal 28 having an extension 29 is riveted into a hole 30 in the region 27: the terminal 28 passes through a clearance hole 31 in the floor of the box 9.
Each of the side portions 5, 6 has secured thereto by a rivet 32 a tempered steel leaf spring 33 extending in "dog-legged" shape laterally from the side portion 5, 6 respectively. Each spring 33 is pivotable about its associated rivet 32 and adapted to snap into alignment with its associated side portion 5, 6 by being sprung over a locating dowel 34 which protrudes laterally from its associated side portion 5, 6 to protrude into a hole 35 in the spring 33. The purpose of this pivoting facility is to facilitate the attachment of the side portions 5, 6 to a pressed steel rim 36 of the light fitting 1 by rivets 37.
The light fitting 1 is assembled by attachment of the side portions 5, 6 to the rim 36 and completion of the yoke 2 by attachment of the box 9 to the side portions 5, 6, appropriate connection of the lamp holder 8 via the terminal block 1 2 and the earthing terminal 28 and attachment of the lid 1 6. The light fitting 1 is inserted into the aperture 3 in the ceiling 4, after connection to an electrical supply, and retained in position in the latter by the springs 33, which had been compressed in the process, re-asserting themselves and co-operating by their end portions 38 with the edge 39 of the aperture 3, whereafter finally a lamp is inserted in the light fitting 1. Removal of the light fitting 1 from the ceiling 4 is accomplished in the reverse order against the retaining force of the springs 33.
The rationalization of the assembly of an electric light fitting embodying the invention, as compared with the assembly of a known electric light fitting of the kind specified will be self-evident to those skilled in the art. Its versatility resides in the fact that it also enables the manufacture and stocking of several of the components of the lamp housing of a range of diameters of the rim 36 (for a corresponding range of apertures 3) to be simplified and standardized, and thereby rationalized.
1. An electric light fitting arranged to be recessed behind a facing by insertion through an opening in said facing, the fitting comprising a rim generally conforming to the size and shape of said opening to fit in said opening, a pair of side members extending in generally parallel directions from opposite sides of said
