Abstract
A mixture of ammonium sulphite and sulphate is prepared by introducing ammonia and water vapour or ammonia, water vapour and water in a fine state of subdivision into a mixture of sulphur dioxide and air, the proportions being such that the temperature does not rise above 100 DEG C. and that the product is obtained in a substantially dry condition. Slight excess of water vapour beyond the quantity theoretically required is employed however in order to obtain the product in an active condition capable of rapid oxidation wholly to sulphate. The mixture of sulphite and sulphate is exposed to air in heaps which are gently raked mechanically or by other means. Part of the air may be introduced together with the ammonia and water vapour and the ammonia may be used in slight excess. Most of the ammonium sulphite-sulphate mixture is precipitated on cooling the gaseous reaction mixture to a temperature not exceeding 40 DEG C., but a further quantity is recovered by means of a Cottrell precipitator. A filter consisting of ammonium sulphate supported on perforated trays may also be employed and the issuing gases are finally passed into a tower and scrubbed with water, ammonia being recovered from the resulting solution of ammonium salts.
