Abstract

A cut and creased blank (10) of faced corrugated cardboard for erection into a box has a base portion (12) and opposing pairs of side (14, 15) and end (16, 17) flaps foldable and fastenable together to form the sides of the box, the end flaps (16, 17) having wing sections (42) that can provide strength for the corners of the box when folded into position. The blank is creased diagonally (at 26) to allow the box to be folded flat. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Blanks for boxes and boxes erected therefrom This invention concerns a blank for a box and a box erected from same.
The term box is intended herein to include also trays and cases.
Boxes are gnerally formed from blanks of suitable material cut and creased for erection into the box usually with fastening together of appropriate flaps by means of adhesive or staples. Some boxes can also be folded flat even with the appropriate flaps already fastened together. For folding flat, rectangular boxes usually have an opposing pair of side flaps creased diagonally across their corners so that those flaps can fold outwards and the other pair of flaps can fold inwards. However, because of these diagonal creases the boxes are weak at their corners.
The object of this invention is to provide a blank for a box which when erected can provide corner strength for the box and a box erected therefrom.
According to a first aspect of this invention there is provided a blank of rigid creasable and foldable material which is cut and creased for erection into a box, the blank having a base portion and opposing pairs of side and end flaps foldable and fastenable together to form the sides of the box, the end flaps having sections that can provide strength for the corners of the box when folded into position.
According to a second aspect of this invention there is provided a box erected from a blank of the first aspect of the invention.
In a preferred embodiment the end flaps have inner and outer sections, the outer being foldable onto the inner to overlie same, and the outer section has wings that fold to lie alongside the adjacent side flaps. These wings are intended to provide strength for the corners of the box.
The preferred material for the blanks of the invention is faced corrugated cardboard. Advantageously, the blank is cut so that the corrugations are transverse the direction of folding of the end flaps so that in an erected, upright box the strengthening wings have their corrugations vertical.
Other features and advantages of the invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a blank for a chicken case; and Figure 2 shows a chicken case erected from the blank of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a blank 10 for a chicken case is made from faced corrugated cardboard, the flutes of the corrugated filling being in the longest direction of the blank.
The blank 10 is made up of a base portion 12 having side flaps 14 and 15 and end flaps 16 and 17 respectively. The side flaps 14 and 15 have at both ends wing flaps 24 separated therefrom by creases 25. The wing flaps 24 are of lesser depth than the side flaps 14, 15 themselves and taper slightly towards their ends remote from the side flaps. The side flaps 14, 15 are creased diagonally across their corners 28 at 26 and have three circular openings 30 for ventilation.
The end flaps 16, 17 have three sections 31, 32 and 33 in sequence separated by creases 34 and 35 respectively the outer section 33 being intended to be folded inwards over onto the inner section 31, the middle section 32, being very narrow, merely connecting the inner and outer sections.
The outer section 33 has a central portion 40 which is slightly shorter than the inner section 31 but has wings 42 separated therefrom by folds 43.
Both of the inner and outer sections 31, 33 have therein slots 45, 46 respectively that overlie each other when the outer section is folded onto the inner section to provide hand holes. The outer sections 33 have tabs 49 on their outer edges which when the blank is erected into a box fit into slots 50 formed along intermediate section of creases 20 and 21.
A chicken case is formed by erecting the blank of Figure 1 as follows. Firstly, the end and side flaps are folded upwards to form the sides of the case with wing flaps 24 folded inwards. The backs of the wing flaps 24 are then fastened to the inside of the adjacent inner sections of end flaps 16 and 17, possibiy by means of adhesive or staples. The wings 42 of the outer sections 33 are folded backwards and the outer sections 33 then folded inwards onto the inner sections of the end flaps so that the tabs 49 locate in the slots 50.
The erected case can be folded flat because of the diagonal creases 26, 27 of the side flaps 14, 15, the end flaps 16, 17 folding inwards after opening out of the outer sections 33 and the side flaps 14, 15 folding outwards.
The blank can be supplied in a flat form either as it is or with the wing flaps 24 already fastened to the end flaps 16, 17.
In the erected case the wings 42 of the outer sections 33 lie alongside the side flaps and provide considerable strength because the flutes of the corrugated cardboard are vertical.
In use a cover or lid for the case is usually provided.
It will be appreciated that although the invention has been specifically described with reference to a chicken case, it is equally applicable to many different types of boxes, trays and cases.

A blank or rigid creasable and foldable material which is cut and creased for erection into a box, the blank having a base portion and opposing pairs of side and end flaps foldable and fastenable together to form the sides of the box, the end flaps having sections that provide strength for the corners of the box when folded into position.
2. A blank as claimed in claim 1, wherein the end flaps have inner and outer sections, the outer being foldable onto the inner to overlie same.
3. A blank as claimed in claim 2, wherein the outer section has wings that fold to lie alongside the adjacent side flaps.
