Abstract
A package for bottles comprises a tray on which the bottles are placed and a stabilizing member for engaging the necks of the bottles. Both the tray and the stabilizing member are made from folded blanks of stiff material. They are connected together by interfitting portions comprising lugs (28) on the stabilizing member which fit into apertures in the tray provided by gaps between the two thicknesses of double-thickness side walls. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A package for articles
This invention relates to a package for articles such as bottles.
According to the present invention there is provided a package comprising a tray and a stabilizing member, the stabilizing member having an upper portion for engaging articles disposed on the tray, the upper portion being supported above the tray by end portions of the stabilizing member, these end portions and the tray having interfitting portions for connecting the stabilizing member to the tray.
The interfitting portions may comprise lugs on the end portions of the stabilizing member and apertures in the tray. Either or both of the stabilizing member and the tray may be made from a folded blank of stiff material, such as corrugated fibre-board. Where this is the case, the tray may have two side walls of double thickness, the apertures then being constituted by a gap between the two thicknesses of material.
The stabilizing member, at least in its upper portion, may have holes for receiving the articles.
Where the articles are bottles, the holes may engage the necks of the bottles. The stabilizing member may have openings in its end portions to serve as hand-holds.
An embodiment in accordance with the present invention provides a sturdy package for bottles which leaves exposed a large area of the sides of the bottles, so that labels or other identifying material on the bottles can readily be inspected.
The package is easy to assemble with the bottles in place and holds the bottles securely, minimising the possibility of damage resulting from collisions between the bottles. The package can be used instead of shrink wrapping techniques, which at present tend to be used for packaging bottled drinks in quantities of more than a dozen.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how it may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a blank for erection into a tray;
Figure 2 shows a blank for formation into a stabilizing member;
Figure 3 shows the blank of Figure 1 partially erected;
Figure 4 shows the stabilizing member being fitted to the tray to form a package containing twelve bottles; and
Figure 5 shows the fully assembled package.
The tray blank of Figure 1 has a base panel 2 to which are hinged two end panels 4, each having two flaps 16, and two outer.side panels 6. Each outer side panel 6 is connected by a double crease 8 to an inner side panel 10. The inner side panels 10 carry tabs 12 which, in the erected tray, project into slots 14.
The stabilizing member blank of Figure 2 comprises a central portion 1 8 and two end portions 20 which are connected to the central portion 1 8 by intermediate portions 22. The central portion 1 8 and the intermediate portions 22 have holes 24. The end portions 20 have handhold openings 26 and lugs 28.
The blank of Figure 1 is erected by folding the end panels 4 upwardly with respect to the base panel 2, and folding the flaps 16 inwardly. At each side of the tray, the outer side panel 6 is then folded upwardly about the base panel 2, and the inner side panel 10 is folded through an angle of 1800 about the double crease 8, the tabs 10 then entering the slots 14 to hold the side walls erect.
Figure 3 shows one side wall fully erect and the other side wall in the course of erection. When the side walls are erect, the flaps 1 6 are retained between the inner and outer side panels 6 and 10, but the width of the double crease 8 is such that the gap between the inner and outer panels 6 and 10 is greater than the thickness of the flaps 1 6. As a result, each side wall provides an aperture 30 at each end. In Figure 4, twelve bottles have been placed in the tray formed from the blank of Figure 1, and the stabilizing member formed from the blank of Figure 2 is being fitted to the tray to hold the bottles securely. At each end of the tray, the lugs 28 in the stabilizing member are inserted into the apertures 30 left between the panels 6 and 10 of the side walls of the tray.
The fully assembled package is shown in Figure 5. The necks of the bottles 32 project through the holes 24 in the central portion of the stabilizing member, to hold the bottles securely in position.
The holes nearest the end portions 20 are larger than the others to take account of the fact that the intermediate portions 22 are inclined.
The package provides a sturdy unit which can easily be carried using the hand-hold openings 26. The strength of the unit is enhanced by the double-thickness side walls of the tray, and the gap between the central portion of the stabilizing member and the top of the side walls of the tray enables the identifying labels on the bottles to be inspected.
The frictional engagement of the lugs 28 in the apertures 30 is sufficient to retain the stabilizing member securely on the tray. The forces applies to the lugs during normal use of the package are upwards forces, i.e. perpendicular to the direction of insertion of the lugs 28, and these forces will not tend to move the lugs 28 out of the apertures 30. Nevertheless, access to the bottles is easily gained by pulling the lower edges of the end portions 20 away from the tray to withdraw the lugs 28 from the apertures 30, so permitting removal of the stabilizing members.
