Abstract

An adjustable bed, as well as being used for sleeping and relaxing purposes, can assume an extra shape by raising the upper body section A horizontally and the seat section B vertically to form a raised platform. This shape facilitates sexual intercourse having advantages for people with a physical handicap or weakness. The sections can be raised by mechanical means, such as a system of levers propelled by a motor driven worm screw, or by the use of inflatable cushions. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Additional Utility to Adjustable Beds Adjustable beds have been used for many years to provide improved sleeping and resting positions.
Basically this is achieved by raising the Upper Body Section (A) of the bed to any angle up to vertical, and raising the Leg Section (C) usually with bent knee, as shown in Fig. 1. The Seat Section (B) remains flat.
My invention is to include a new shape which provides an added utility of general interest but particularly to people with a physical handicap or weakness. The new shape is shown in Fig. 2.
Wherein the improvement comprises the raising of the Seat Section (B) to a vertical or near vertical angle, as the Upper Body Section (A) is raised to, or assumes a horizontal or near horizontal position above the level of the Leg Section (C) which remains flat. The purpose of this new shape is to facilitate sexual intercourse.
This new shape can be achieved by various mechanical means, or the use of inflatable cushions.
One such method is illustrated in Fig. 3. The Upper Body Section (A) can rise from axis (1) in the accepted way or take the new shape by pivoting on axis (2) and on axis (1). The main lever (7) is connected to the base (D) at axis (3) and rises when lever (8) which is connected to lever (7) at axis (4), is propelled forward from point (10), (i.e. by motor driven worm screw). Lever (9) is connected to lever (7) at axis (5) and to Upper Body Section (A) at axis (6).
Only the Upper Body Section (A) will rise if the Seat Section (B) is fixed down or held down by the weight of the occupant. Both the Upper Body Section (A) and Seat Section (B) will rise to new shape if Seat Section is not fixed. Extra support could be provided at position (x) as necessary.
1. An additional utility to adjustable beds comprising a seat section (B) which can rise to a vertical, or near vertical, position whilst the upper body section (A) remains, or becomes, horizontal thus forming a raised, or rising, platform for the trunk of a person.
2. An additional utility to adjustable beds as in Claim 1, whereby the upper body section (A) can rise from Axis 1. in the accepted way or, by allowing the seat section to rise vertically, it can rise horizontally using Axis 1 & 2.
3. An additional utility to adjustable beds substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 & 2 of the accompanying drawings.
